Polzeath: The Jewel of North Cornwall
Polzeath is a wide sandy beach on the north coast of Cornwall, UK, which in the Victorian era transformed from a modest fishing village into a popular resort. The name "Polzeath" comes from the Cornish expression "Polsegh", meaning "dry pool" — this is because at low tide part of the beach remains dry, with the water retreating far from the shore. Today Polzeath is considered one of the best surfing beaches in the country and a magnet for water sports enthusiasts.
John Betjeman and St Enodoc Church
Polzeath Beach is inextricably linked with the name of British Poet Laureate John Betjeman, who often holidayed here and whose love for these places is reflected in his poetry. Betjeman is buried in the churchyard of St Enodoc Church, located among the sand dunes at Trebetherick, near the beach. This historic 12th-century church was buried in sand and not restored until 1864 — before that, clergy and parishioners were lowered inside through a hole in the roof. Today the church is surrounded by the St Enodoc Golf Club course and is one of Cornwall's most unusual attractions.
Military History: D-Day Training Exercises
During the Second World War, Polzeath Beach was used by the Allies to practise for the Normandy landings (D-Day). The wide sandy shore and rocky approaches made it an ideal location for training amphibious operations. Winston Churchill personally visited the beach to observe the troops training for the opening of the Second Front in Europe.
Surfing and Water Sports
Polzeath is considered one of the best surfing beaches in the UK, particularly suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers. The beach break provides consistent waves that break over the sandy bottom. The best time for surfing is mid-tide, as at low water the rocks are exposed, and at high tide the waves can "close out". Surf schools Surf's Up and Wavehunters operate on the beach, offering lessons and equipment hire. In summer the water temperature warms up to a maximum of +17°C, dropping to +8°C in winter.
Safety and RNLI Lifeguards
A distinctive feature of Polzeath Beach is its strong currents and rapid tides. Rip currents frequently occur in the swimming area, so bathing is only permitted in the patrolled zone. RNLI lifeguards patrol the beach from Easter to October, and swimming is recommended only between the red and yellow flags. During the summer season, lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 to 18:00, and at the end of their shift a red flag is raised, prohibiting entry into the water.
Visitor Rules: Dogs and Facilities
Polzeath is one of the few popular beaches in Cornwall with seasonal restrictions for pets. Dogs are banned on the main beach from 15 May to 30 September, 10:00 to 18:00, but at other times of the year they are allowed across the entire beach. The promenade is home to numerous cafés, pubs and restaurants, including The Cruggy Café and The Atlantic. The beach lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the surrounding rocks consist of ancient slates and limestones.
Surrounding Area: Rock, Daymer Bay and Port Isaac
Opposite Polzeath, on the other side of the River Camel estuary, lies the upmarket village of Rock, which can be reached by ferry during the summer season. Just beyond the headland south of Polzeath is Daymer Bay — a beach perfect for family holidays, as it is sheltered from strong winds and forms shallow lagoons at low tide. A short drive away is Port Isaac — a fishing village known as the filming location for the popular British TV series "Doc Martin". The South West Coast Path runs along the cliffs at Polzeath — one of the most scenic walking routes in the UK.
Rock Pools and Wildlife
At low tide, Polzeath Beach reveals vast rock formations and rock pools that are home to a multitude of marine creatures — crabs, sea anemones, small fish and shellfish. These natural aquariums are especially popular with families with children, who can spend hours exploring the life of the intertidal zone. The rocks around the beach consist of ancient slates and limestones, and the rock pools contain fossils hundreds of millions of years old.
