Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar — Live Webcam Online
Sylmar, nestled in sunny California, is home to a unique place where not just a puppy is born, but a true guardian angel for people with visual impairments. Guide Dogs of America is an entire universe where black labradors in yellow vests take their first steps toward their great mission. Our live webcam allows you to peek into this world and see the beginning of a future guide dog's journey.
History of the Place: From Clark Gable's Stables to Saving Lives
The territory where the kennel now stands has a remarkable past. According to local legend, these lands were once used by the legendary actor Clark Gable as stables. Today, instead of thoroughbred horses, they raise purebred dogs that give freedom of movement to thousands of people across the country.
Scale of Sylmar: 7.5 Acres for Future Guide Dogs
The Guide Dogs of America kennel occupies a vast area — about 7.5 acres (roughly 3 hectares) at 13445 Glenoaks Boulevard. It's a spacious territory where puppies can run, play, and socialize. Each year, around 200 dogs are born and raised here, each going through a long journey from a clumsy little bundle to a professional guide dog.
TLC Program: How Volunteers Raise Heroes
Early socialization is the key to a future guide dog's success. The kennel runs a unique program called "Tender Loving Canines" (TLC), where volunteers take puppies into their homes for raising. This allows the dogs from an early age to get used to city noise, people, and various situations, making their future work more effective and calm.
28 Days of Training: School for People and Dogs
When the dogs complete their initial training, the most crucial part begins — learning as a team with a human. Blind and visually impaired students come to Sylmar and live in the kennel's dormitories to undergo an intensive course. This process takes 28 days, during which the person and the dog become one, learning to trust each other completely.
Mission Beyond Guide Dogs: Helping Veterans and Children
While the main specialization is guide dogs, the organization's mission is much broader. Guide Dogs of America provides service dogs for veterans and children with autism. Every graduate of the Sylmar kennel is not just an assistant, but a true rescuer and friend who dramatically changes the quality of their owner's life.
