Varkaus Embankment — A Finnish Name on Karelian Soil
Varkaus Embankment in Petrozavodsk was named in honor of the Finnish twin city Varkaus, with which Petrozavodsk maintains friendly ties. It is one of the newest streets in the capital of Karelia, stretching along the shore of Lake Onega. The embankment has become a popular spot for walks among locals and tourists — it is convenient for strolling with children, and in the evenings you can see joggers running along the promenade.
How Varkaus Embankment Came to Be
The modern Varkaus Embankment is a new street in Petrozavodsk, where buildings were constructed in 2010–2013. For example, Building No. 33 was built in 2010 — a 10-story brick apartment building. And in 2013, construction of a 25-story residential building was planned on the site of the demolished shopping center "Shans."
However, the history of this place goes much deeper. According to archaeological data, Neolithic settlements in the area of modern Varkaus Embankment existed as early as 4000–2000 BC. So people lived here long before Petrozavodsk appeared as a city.
Sculptures and Art Objects on the Embankment
Varkaus Embankment is famous for its art objects. One of the most well-known is a sculpture from the twin city of Varkaus, installed in 1997. The author is Finnish artist Anna Kettonen. Also, before the New Year, the sculpture "Khorovod" (Round Dance) appeared here, which became a new spot for photo sessions.
The embankment features a memorial sign dedicated to the twin cities of Petrozavodsk, which include Neubrandenburg (GDR), La Rochelle (France), Umeå (Sweden), and Varkaus (Finland). It is a symbol of international friendship and cooperation.
Onega Embankment — The Calling Card of Petrozavodsk
The Onega Embankment of Petrozavodsk stretches for one and a half kilometers along the lake shore. It is the calling card of the capital of Karelia and a favorite place for walks. The central part of the embankment is faced with red stone — Shoksha crimson quartzite, mined 60 kilometers from the city. Interestingly, the same stone was used for Napoleon's tomb and Lenin's Mausoleum.
Events Held on the Embankment
Varkaus Embankment is not only a place for walks but also a venue for city events. Here you can find:

• Republic flashmob "Karelian Kruuga" — held on the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples on the embankment of Lake Onega
