Park Planet — the history of Astrakhan's amusement park

Park "Planet" has long remained one of the main family recreation spots in Astrakhan. Its history began in 1993, when the city hall transferred the territory to entrepreneur Oleg Sarychev as a social obligation — the city budget could not maintain the green zone, trees were dying, and the park was turning into a wasteland. The entrepreneur took on the commitment to restore and develop the territory, transforming it into a full-fledged amusement park.

The Ferris wheel — symbol of Park Planet

The park's main attraction was a Ferris wheel approximately 44 meters tall — the only one in Astrakhan. It became a true symbol of the city and a model for all of Russia thanks to its modernized cabins and state-of-the-art lighting system. From the top of the wheel, visitors enjoyed a panoramic view of the entire Sovetsky district and the Volga waterway. The Governor of Astrakhan Region Igor Babushkin ordered the modernization of Astrakhan's parks, and it was planned that the wheel would not only be preserved but also upgraded.

Rides and park infrastructure

The territory of Park Planet featured over 20 rides: a classic carousel with horses, a go-kart track, trampolines, a petting zoo, and even a pool. Special areas were set up for the youngest guests, while teenagers and adults could enjoy extreme attractions. The warehouses stored 44 artificial coconut palms ranging from 5 to 7.5 meters in height and 800 square meters of artificial grass for decorating a themed island.

Tragedy and park closure

In August 2023, Park Planet was closed following a tragedy — a child drowned in the pool at the park's attraction. This event became a turning point in the park's fate. Despite plans to modernize and preserve the Ferris wheel, the dismantling of rides began in 2025. LLC "Park Planet" was liquidated on March 23, 2026.

What is happening at the park site now

A new residential complex consisting of four high-rise buildings is planned for the site of the former amusement park. The Ferris wheel, which had long been out of operation, is also being dismantled. The area once filled with children's laughter and the sounds of rides is gradually turning into a construction site. Major transportation arteries connecting the Sovetsky district with the center of Astrakhan run nearby.

You can reach the location by public transport or personal vehicle. The Sovetsky district is well connected to other parts of the city by buses and minibuses. For motorists, parking is available at nearby shopping centers. When driving along the main highways of the district, the Ferris wheel serves as a landmark — it is visible from afar and is the main point of attraction in this part of Astrakhan.
