History of Craigmillar Golf Club

Craigmillar Park Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in the Scottish capital. It was founded in 1895 and was originally located elsewhere. In 1907, the club moved to its current site southeast of Edinburgh city centre, where it remains to this day.

The course took on its modern layout in 1927, when it was expanded to 18 holes to a design by renowned Scottish architect James Braid. Braid is considered one of the pioneers of golf course architecture in the United Kingdom, and his work is valued for its thoughtful integration of the course into the natural landscape.

Location and Surroundings

The golf club is situated in the Craigmillar area, approximately 3 miles southeast of Edinburgh city centre. It is a quiet residential district bordering Duddingston to the north and Newcraighall to the east. The club lies close to Blackford Hill and the Royal Observatory, offering panoramic views of the city and the Fife region across the Firth of Forth.

The Craigmillar area has a rich history and features both historic buildings and new residential developments. The Scottish Government is implementing the Green Quarter Plan here — a large-scale regeneration project creating new parks and woodland areas.

Climate Features

Edinburgh lies in a temperate maritime climate zone classified as Cfb under the Köppen classification. The warmest month is July, with an average maximum temperature of 18°C, and the coldest is January, with an average minimum of 1°C.

These conditions are ideal for golf: mild winters allow play almost year-round, and cool summers do not cause discomfort for players. The greens at Craigmillar Park remain in excellent condition thanks to regular rainfall and moderate temperatures.

In close proximity to the golf club stands Craigmillar Castle — the ruins of a 15th-century medieval castle with a distinctive L-shaped tower layout. The castle was expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries by the Preston family and is known for its association with Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.

The castle grounds include extensive gardens and parks that are popular with tourists and locals alike. It is a place where history intertwines with modernity — medieval walls sit alongside well-manicured golf fairways.

Parkland and Landscape

Craigmillar Park is not only a golf course but also an extensive green space with diverse vegetation. The club grounds feature centuries-old trees, shrubs, and hedgerows. Gentle hills and natural elevation changes create a picturesque landscape characteristic of the Scottish Lowlands.

Stone-paved footpaths run alongside the course, allowing walkers to watch the game of golf. Flower beds with red and orange blooms add vibrant accents to the green landscape, especially during the summer months.
