Bridge over the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs — Live Webcam
History of Grand Avenue Bridge — From an Old Crossing to an Architectural Icon
The Colorado River has always been a natural barrier to transportation routes in western Colorado. The first automobile bridge across the river near Glenwood Springs appeared back in the mid-20th century, but by the early 2010s it had completely exhausted its service life. The old 1953 bridge was deemed functionally obsolete and structurally deficient, which put the city in need of a major reconstruction.
The decision to build a new bridge took more than a year — it wasn't just about replacing a worn-out structure, but creating a modern transportation artery that would fit into the landscape of one of Colorado's most scenic towns. Ultimately, the project was completed in record time: the main phase of replacing the spans took just 95 days. The new Grand Avenue Bridge was officially completed in 2017, and the pedestrian section was opened in April of the same year, replacing the outdated pedestrian bridge.
Architecture and Engineering Solutions of the New Bridge
Grand Avenue Bridge is not just a functional crossing, but a full-fledged architectural landmark. The structure is a multi-span continuous beam bridge made of steel and reinforced concrete (steel-reinforced concrete composite bridge). This solution provides high load-bearing capacity while maintaining visual lightness of the structure.
One of the key architectural features is the integral pier caps, which visually reduce the mass of the supports. This was done intentionally: the designers aimed to provide an unobstructed view beneath the bridge of Glenwood Springs' historic buildings, the Colorado River channel, and the surrounding mountain landscapes. Design work was carried out under the direction of engineering firms RS&H Inc. from Denver and Jacobs Engineering.
The Colorado River at Glenwood Springs — Rapids, Scenery, and Ecosystem
Near Glenwood Springs, the Colorado River flows through a deep canyon, and it is here that the river shows its character — fast current, rapids with white foam, rocky banks. The riverbed in this section is reinforced with boulders and pebbles, creating a picturesque scene especially during high water periods. The riverbanks are lined with green vegetation, and the hilly landscape with buildings visible in the distance adds an urban context to the natural scenery.
The Colorado in this location is not just a water barrier, but a central element of the city's identity. The river feeds Glenwood Springs' famous hot springs, shapes the valley's microclimate, and creates conditions for a unique ecosystem that can be observed right from the bridge.
Wildlife Around the Bridge
The surroundings of Glenwood Springs are renowned for their biodiversity. Along the Colorado River and adjacent slopes, bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer and many other representatives of Rocky Mountain fauna inhabit the area. For an attentive observer, a walk along the pedestrian section of the bridge or through the park area can turn into a real safari — especially early in the morning or at dusk, when animals are most active.
Wave Park and Pedestrian Infrastructure
On the right bank of the Colorado, directly by the bridge, lies the well-maintained Wave Park. This is not just a lawn with paths, but a full-fledged public space: a stone retaining wall, stairs leading down to the water, benches for resting, and green plantings. The park has become a natural extension of Grand Avenue Bridge's pedestrian infrastructure, connecting downtown Glenwood Springs with the recreational area along the river.
The pedestrian bridge, opened in 2017, allows residents and visitors to cross the river on foot while enjoying panoramic views. It has become an important link in the network of pedestrian routes connecting the historic center with thermal pools and tourist attractions on the opposite bank.
Why the View from the Bridge Became the City's Calling Card
Grand Avenue Bridge quickly became one of the most photographed landmarks in Glenwood Springs. There are several reasons: first, the bridge offers one of the best views of the Hot Springs Pool — the world's largest mineral thermal pool. Second, the panoramic view captures multiple layers of landscape at once: the rushing Colorado River with rapids, hilly slopes with vegetation, historic buildings, and mountain peaks on the horizon.
This is precisely why Grand Avenue Bridge has become a popular subject for webcams and photographs — the view from it is considered one of the most recognizable in the city. The online camera with a view of the bridge allows you to appreciate this panorama at any time of day and in any weather.
