History of a Folk Hero

Why is the lighthouse named after Jan van Speyk? Jan Karel Josephus van Speyk was born on January 31, 1802, in Amsterdam, became an orphan at age 10, and at 18 joined the Royal Netherlands Navy. He became a true folk hero during the Belgian Revolution in 1831, when in Antwerp he blew up his gunboat surrounded by Belgians rather than lower the flag. The sailor's feat is forever inscribed in history: by royal decree of 1833, a ship named "Jan van Speyk" will always be part of the Dutch fleet.

Architecture and Symbolism of the Lighthouse

The construction of the lighthouse was completed in 1834, when the first keepers were appointed and the light was lit. The tower height is 37 meters, and its light rises 28 meters above sea level. The building carries deep symbolic meaning: the lighthouse foundation is shaped like a grave and serves as the official Dutch memorial to Jan van Speyk. It is one of the oldest lighthouses in the Netherlands, nearly 200 years old, and is a registered national monument.

Navigational Role and Light Signals

For a long time, the lighthouse played a crucial role in navigation. After the construction of the North Sea Canal and two lighthouses at the mouth (IJmuiden), to avoid confusion, the van Speyk tower was equipped with red glass. The northern side of the lighthouse light is red — this warns sailors of dangerous shoals off the coast north of Egmond. Once a vessel leaves the danger zone, it sees a white light. With the advent of satellite navigation in the 1980s, the navigational importance of the structure diminished, though some coastal vessels still use it as a reference point. There was once another tower in Egmond — the southern one at Torensduin, but it was deactivated in 1891 and demolished in 1915.
