Historical Heritage of the Cobb Harbour
Lyme Regis is a town where every stone breathes history, and the Cobb harbour has guarded the bay for over seven centuries. Lyme Regis holds a special place in English literature. Jane Austen's final great novel, "Persuasion", is partly set here. The pivotal scene on the Cobb — the fall from the parapet — becomes a turning point in the love story of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth. The town is also linked to John Fowles' novel "The French Lieutenant's Woman," which was adapted into a film of the same name in 1981. Long before its scientific fame, the town was known for legends of a "sea witch" who, according to folklore, protected the village from invaders.
