History of the Gornyak Sports Complex

Kushva is a town with a rich history, located on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains. The 35th anniversary of its founding was celebrated on December 13, which allows us to trace the history of the facility back to approximately 1986 or 1987. In Soviet times, such complexes were built according to standard designs, but Gornyak always had its own specificity — it was created with the active participation of local enterprises and quickly became not just a sports facility, but a true community center.

The legal registration of the institution occurred much later. The Municipal Autonomous Institution "Center for Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism Gornyak" was registered on January 31, 2006. Since then, nearly two decades have passed, and during this time the complex has gone through several stages — from prosperity to major renovation and revival.

Sports and Infrastructure

The Gornyak Sports Complex is not just a single building, but an entire complex of facilities oriented toward a wide variety of sports. You can train here in virtually any weather and at any time of year. The program includes cross-country skiing, boxing, shooting, volleyball, hockey, and basketball. This range of disciplines makes the complex a universal venue — both amateurs and professional athletes train here.

The open sports court with markings for team sports is one of the key locations of the complex. It is used for training and competitions in volleyball and basketball during the warm season. Reconstruction and Revival

Like many sports facilities in the post-Soviet space, Gornyak went through difficult times. By the early 2010s, the infrastructure required serious renovation. In 2011, an open auction was announced for the reconstruction of the sports complex building with an initial contract price of 7,200,000 rubles. This was the first step toward large-scale modernization.

However, the reconstruction was delayed. The sports complex was closed for renovation for approximately 5 years — from 2014 to 2019. For the town, this was a difficult period: athletes lost their familiar base, and residents were left without a place for family recreation. The revival of the complex became possible thanks to the financial support of the Kushva Municipal District administration and sponsor assistance. The updated Gornyak opened its doors with modernized halls, renovated locker rooms, and improved lighting.

Today, the institution is headed by Artem Valeryevich Proskurin, appointed director on May 25, 2023. The sole founder is the Kushva Municipal District of Sverdlovsk Oblast, which underscores the importance of the facility for the region.

Geography: Kushva and the Tura River

The sports complex is located at Sverdlovsk Oblast, Kushva, Lunacharskogo St., 9. This location was chosen for a reason — it is in close proximity to the Kushva Reservoir, formed on the Tura River.
