History of the Avenue: From Peter the Great to the Present Day

Karl Marx Avenue is one of the oldest thoroughfares in Kingisepp, with roots stretching back to the era of Peter the Great. Originally, this road was called Bolshaya Saint Petersburgskaya Street, reflecting its strategic importance as the route to the capital. In 1914, amid anti-German sentiment, the street was renamed Petrogradskaya. Soviet rule brought further changes: in 1920 it became Krasnaya, and in 1937 it received its final name — Karl Marx Avenue.

The city itself bore the name Yamburg until 1922 — a name given by Peter the Great in 1703. On May 17, 1922, by decree of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, Yamburg was renamed Kingisepp in honor of the Estonian revolutionary Viktor Kingisepp.

It is dedicated to Red Army soldiers who fell in 1944 during the liberation of Kingisepp, and those who died in 1919 fighting against the White Poles. Nearby, in a small square before the ensemble of former barracks, lies a mass grave.
