Kościuszko Avenue in the Centre of Łódź — History and Architecture
Kościuszko Avenue is one of the main thoroughfares in the centre of Łódź, stretching from Zielona Street to Wolczanska Street, entirely located within the Katedralna district. This online camera shows a busy intersection with tram tracks crossing the roadway and a large early 20th-century historic building with a richly decorated façade.
The idea of creating the avenue dates back to the 1823 Łódź regulation plan, which envisaged a star-shaped street system. However, the avenue was not actually established until the 1860s. The first section was laid out in 1865, and in 1873 it received its name.
The avenue is named after Tadeusz Kościuszko — a Polish national hero, participant in the American Revolutionary War, leader of the 1794 Polish uprising, and recipient of the Virtuti Militari order. Previously, the avenue was called Promenade (Promenada) and was created as an extension of Zachodnia Street to the south as a wide dual-carriageway avenue.
Architectural Landmarks of Kościuszko Avenue
Kościuszko Avenue features historic 19th-century tenement houses of significant architectural value. Among them:
— Nissen Rosenblum Tenement (No. 21)
— Bernard Glücksman Tenement (intersection with Sierpowa Street) in Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Renaissance styles
— Wilhelm Lürken Palace (No. 33/35)
— Henryk Brautigam Tenement (No. 53)
The tenement on the corner of Kościuszko Avenue and Zielona Street was built in 1896 and remained the largest residential building in Łódź until 1966. The avenue also houses the former Trade Bank (No. 15, now PKO), the District Branch of the National Bank of Poland (No. 14), and the former factory of Max Wilczyński and Jakub Hirschberg (No. 23/25).
Transport Infrastructure
Kościuszko Avenue has a rich transport history. In 1927, tram lines were launched on a short section of the avenue, in 1935 clinker paving was laid, and by 1937 the avenue had been sewered. Today, tram tracks remain an integral part of the avenue and are clearly visible on the live camera.
The roadway features traffic lanes and pedestrian crossings with traffic lights. In the right part of the frame, there is an open parking area with parked cars. The avenue is actively used by both public transport and private vehicles.
