Constitution Square in Przemyśl — online webcam stream
The Historical Heart of Subcarpathia
Przemyśl is one of the oldest cities in Poland, located in the southeastern part of the country on the border with Ukraine. This border city with a population of about 60,000 has served for centuries as a crossroads of trade routes and cultures. Constitution Square of 3 May is the city's central point, where transport arteries, historical architecture, and the daily life of residents intertwine. The online camera in real time allows you to see this place from anywhere in the world — just open the broadcast and watch the rhythm of Polish Subcarpathia.
Why the Square Is Called Constitution Square
The square's name refers to a landmark event in European history — the Constitution of 3 May 1791, which became the first constitution in Europe and the second in the world after the United States. It was in the church standing on this square that on 3 May 1791, this foundational document of the Great Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was sworn. The square became a symbolic place commemorating the Poles' aspiration for state self-determination and the rule of law.
Holy Trinity Church — Witness of the Era
Dominating Constitution Square of 3 May is the Holy Trinity Church (Kościół Trójcy Przenajświętszej) at Plac Konstytucji 3 Maja 8. During the time of the Great Sejm, the church held the rank of a collegiate church, which emphasized its special status in the church hierarchy. It was here in 1791 that the oath to the Constitution was taken — an event that determined the subsequent course of Polish history. The architectural appearance of the church combines features of Baroque and Classicism, characteristic of the sacred architecture of southeastern Poland in the 18th century.
Garrison Church of St. Stanislaus
Another significant element of the square's architectural ensemble is the Neo-Baroque garrison church of St. Stanislaus, rebuilt in 1925–1930 from the former Church of St. Nicholas. This church served as a spiritual center for the Przemyśl military garrison, which in the interwar period was one of the largest in Poland. The church's tall bell tower is visible from the square and serves as a landmark for tourists arriving in the city by rail.
The City's Transport Hub
Constitution Square serves as the main transport hub of Przemyśl. Located here are the railway station (Dworzec PKP) and the bus station, making the square the first point that travelers see when arriving in the city. Rail connections link Przemyśl with Kraków, Warsaw, Rzeszów, and Lviv in Ukraine. Bus routes cover not only major Polish cities but also border towns of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship.
View of the San River and the Orlęta Bridge
From Constitution Square, there is a view of the Przemyśl Orlęta Bridge (Most Orląt Przemyskich) spanning the San River. This bridge is named after the "Przemyśl eaglets" — young Poles who participated in the defense of the city in 1918 during the Polish-Ukrainian War. The San River, a tributary of the Vistula, historically served as a natural border and trade route that determined the strategic importance of Przemyśl for centuries.
Przemyśl Fortress in the Background
On the hills visible from Constitution Square were the fortifications of the Przemyśl Fortress — one of the largest fortification complexes in Europe. Austro-Hungarian engineers built the fortifications from the mid-19th century until the outbreak of World War I. The fortress played a fateful role in World War I when Russian troops besieged it twice — in 1914 and 1915. Today, the ruins of the forts on the surrounding hills are a destination for historical tourism.
How to Get to Constitution Square
Constitution Square of 3 May is located in the very center of Przemyśl, within walking distance of the railway station. From Kraków, the train takes about 3.5 hours; from Warsaw, approximately 5 hours with a transfer or a direct train in 4 hours. From Ukraine, via the Medyka-Shehyni border crossing, you can reach it by bus or minibus in 30–40 minutes. For motorists, the square is accessible via national road No. 94 and the S19 expressway, which is part of the European route E371.
