Solkan Town in Slovenia — live webcam streaming online
Solkan — a gem on the border of Slovenia and Italy
Solkan is a small yet remarkably atmospheric town in western Slovenia, located in close proximity to the Italian border. It is a place where alpine traditions meet Mediterranean flair, and history is felt at every step. The town of Solkan was first mentioned on April 28, 1001 as "Siliganum" along with a village that was called Gorica in the Slavic language. Today it is a modern settlement with a population of about 3,194 people as estimated for 2026.
For a long time, Solkan and neighboring Nova Gorica were considered a single city, and only in 1991 did Solkan become part of the independent Republic of Slovenia, gaining its modern identity. Today it is a quiet and cozy place that attracts travelers with its authenticity and stunning views.
Solkan Bridge — a world record among stone arches
The main attraction of Solkan is the legendary Solkan Bridge, which is visible from the online camera. This grand structure, 219.7 meters long, spans the Soča River and is considered the longest stone arch railway bridge in the world with an arch span of 85 meters.
The bridge was completed in 1905 as part of the Bohinj Railway connecting Gorica and Jesenice. Originally it had five arches, and its construction was a true engineering feat of the early 20th century. The masonry, precise proportions, and harmonious integration into the surrounding landscape make this bridge not just a transportation artery, but a work of art.
Military destruction and the bridge's revival
The history of the Solkan Bridge is full of dramatic events. In August 1916, during World War I, Austrian soldiers destroyed the bridge using 930 kilograms of ecrasite to prevent its use by invading Italian troops. The explosion was so powerful that it completely destroyed the central arches of the structure.
However, the bridge was not destined to disappear. After World War I, the bridge was restored according to the original plans and continues to serve to this day. During World War II, the bridge was blown up again, but was not severely damaged and was finally repaired in 1954. Today it remains an active railway viaduct and a monument to engineering thought.
The Soča River — Slovenia's emerald artery
The webcam in Solkan offers a view of one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe — the Soča. Its unique emerald-green color is a very rare phenomenon for a river, preserved along its entire length. This hue is created by tiny particles of calcium carbonate carried by water from alpine glaciers and limestone rocks.
Solkan is home to a kayak center on the Soča River, and the Soča Valley offers rafting, hiking, and picturesque landscapes. Along the riverbanks, rocky areas, shallows, and dense vegetation create a unique alpine landscape. Green hills and mountains framed by forest complete the picture of this amazing corner of Slovenia.
Solkan Viewpoint — panorama of three bridges
For those who want to see the scale of the valley, a viewpoint has been set up in Solkan. The Solkan Viewpoint offers a panoramic view of all three bridges over the Soča River, the settlement of Solkan, and the towns of Nova Gorica and Italian Gorizia. From a bird's-eye view, you can see how the railway, road, and pedestrian bridges cross the emerald surface of the river, creating a unique composition.
From the viewpoint, you can also see the Franciscan monastery of Castagnevizza on the mountain, adding historical depth to the surrounding landscape. This place is ideal for photography and contemplating the beauty of nature and human genius.
Famous residents and Olympic history
Solkan is a town with a rich sports history. It was home to Jure Franko, an Olympic hero, whose name is forever inscribed in the history of Slovenian sports. This fact adds special status to the town and pride among local residents.
The traditions of an active lifestyle continue today — the Soča River attracts kayakers, rafters, and water sports enthusiasts from all over Europe. The Soča Valley has become a true center of adventure tourism, where nature and sports merge into one.
Architectural heritage and modernity
Next to the railway bridge is a road bridge, built in the second half of the 20th century to connect Nova Gorica and the Brda region. It reflects the characteristic architectural design of its more famous "older brother," creating a striking ensemble of engineering structures over the river.
The town of Solkan maintains a balance between historical heritage and modern life. Quiet streets, traditional houses, stone walls, and green gardens create an atmosphere of coziness and tranquility so characteristic of small Slovenian towns.
What the camera shows
The online camera in Solkan broadcasts a panoramic view of a pedestrian suspension bridge over the river with greenish water. The bridge has a metal railing and is suspended by cables, resting on a stone retaining wall on the right bank. In the background is a hilly terrain covered with forest and dense vegetation, with mountains in the distance. Along the riverbanks, rocky areas, shallows, and vegetation are visible. The sky is cloudy. The webcam in real time allows you to observe changes in lighting, water level, and pedestrian activity on the bridge, creating a sense of presence in this amazing corner of Slovenia.
