Technical Specifications of the Črni Kal Viaduct
The Črni Kal Viaduct is an engineering structure that impresses with its scale. Located in Slovenia near the town of Koper, it is part of the A1 motorway connecting the Adriatic coast with the capital Ljubljana. The country's highest viaduct towers over the Osp River valley at a record height.
The main structural parameters are impressive: the total length of the overpass is 1,065 meters, and the width is 24.5 meters, accommodating two lanes of traffic in each direction. The height of the piers ranges from 12 to 87.5 meters — it is the V5 pier that holds the record as the highest point of the viaduct in Slovenia. For comparison, this is roughly the height of a 29-story building.
Construction History
The construction of the Črni Kal Viaduct took place from 2001 to 2004. To build this giant, the incremental launching method was used — a unique technology in which prestressed concrete sections were cast behind the structure and gradually pushed forward across the spans by hydraulic jacks. This approach minimized the impact on the fragile ecosystem of the Osp Valley below.
The project became one of the key elements in the development of Slovenia's transport infrastructure, providing a fast connection between the port city of Koper and the central regions of the country. The viaduct was commissioned in 2004 and has since remained a vital artery for tourists and local residents.
Geographic Location and the Osp Valley
The viaduct is located on the A1 motorway in the Gabrovica area, approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Koper. It crosses the deep Osp River valley (Kanjo Ospa), from which it takes its name. The Osp is a picturesque river flowing through the karst landscape of the Primorska region.
The surroundings of the viaduct feature typical karst terrain: rolling hills covered with mixed forests and dry grass. In the background, mountain ranges with wooded slopes are visible, characteristic of this corner of Slovenia. From the height of the viaduct, a panorama of the Adriatic coast opens up on clear days.
Krničal Ski Center
In the immediate vicinity of the viaduct, on Mount Krnik (Krnička gora), lies the Krničal ski center. This is a small but cozy resort, operating primarily during the winter season. Krničal is popular among residents of the coast and the Karst region due to its accessibility and family-friendly atmosphere.
The ski center offers several slopes of varying difficulty, suitable for both beginners and experienced skiers. In winter, residents of Koper and surrounding towns flock here to enjoy active mountain recreation. In summer, the area attracts tourists with hiking trails and cycling routes.
A1 Motorway and Transport Interchange
The Črni Kal Viaduct is a key element of the A1 motorway, which is the main transport artery of Slovenia. This motorway connects the port city of Koper on the Adriatic coast with Ljubljana and further leads toward Austria and Central Europe. Traffic intensity here is significant, especially during the summer season when tourists head en masse to the seaside.
Transport interchanges are located on the approaches to the viaduct, providing access toward Gabrovica and other settlements in the region. Below, under the overpass, local roads run connecting settlements in the Osp Valley. The camera allows you to observe traffic both on the motorway itself and on adjacent roads.
Best Time to Watch the Camera
The webcam with a view of the Črni Kal Viaduct is interesting at any time of year, but each season offers its own unique perspective. In winter, you can watch snow-clearing equipment at work on the motorway and the Krničal ski center in action. During this season, the viaduct is often shrouded in fog, creating atmospheric footage.
In summer, the camera shows green mountain slopes and heavy tourist traffic. On clear days, a view of the Adriatic Sea opens up from the height of the viaduct. In autumn and spring — moderate traffic and beautiful sunsets over the Osp Valley. At night, the overpass is illuminated, creating a picturesque scene against the starry sky.
What You Can See on the Camera
The camera broadcasts a view of the Krničal ski center and the Črni Kal Viaduct in real time. The image shows a large viaduct overpass crossing the valley between mountain slopes. Below, roads with moving cars are visible, along with an interchange. The terrain is hilly, covered with forest and dry grass. In the background, mountain ranges with wooded slopes can be seen. The sky is blue with light clouds.
