Resort History: From Foundation to Present Day

Niseko Hanazono Resort was founded in 1992 by Tokyu Land Corporation. The resort is located on the northern slope of Mount Annupuri — a strategic position ensuring stable snow cover throughout the entire season.

Today, Hanazono is part of Niseko United, which unites four resorts on a single mountain: Grand Hirafu, Annupuri, Hanazono, and Niseko Village. A single lift pass allows skiing across all four zones, and this live camera lets you assess the condition of Hanazono slopes before heading out.

Geography: Where Niseko Is Located

The resort is located on the island of Hokkaido, in the town of Kutchan, approximately 50 km west of Sapporo. Kutchan is the capital of the subprefecture, located just north of the famous Mount Yōtei volcano, which is called "Hokkaido's Fuji" due to its perfect conical shape.

Niseko is not a single resort but an entire agglomeration of ski zones at the foot of Mount Annupuri (1,308 m). Hanazono occupies the northeastern sector and is known for its wide intermediate runs and excellent freeride terrain.

How to Get to Niseko Hanazono

The distance from Sapporo to Kutchan is approximately 92 km. Main routes:

By car: Exit Sapporo via Route 230 through Nakoyama Pass to Kimobetsu, then turn onto Route 276 toward Kutchan. In winter, roads are regularly cleared, but a vehicle with winter tires or chains is recommended.

By train: Train from Sapporo to Kutchan Station (about 2 hours), then bus or taxi to the resort.

By bus: Direct services from New Chitose Airport and Sapporo Station. Travel time is 2–2.5 hours depending on weather.

Ski Season and Runs

The ski season at Niseko Hanazono runs from early December to early April — one of the longest on Hokkaido. The resort is home to the largest snow park on the island: 3 parks by skill level — Jib Park for beginners, Sunset Beach for experienced riders, and freeride zones.

Hanazono slopes face north and northeast, ensuring stable snow cover and less sun exposure. Average snow depth in peak season reaches 3–4 meters, and the famous "Japow" (Japanese powder) is considered some of the best in the world for freeriding.
