History and significance of Hamburg Airport

Hamburg Airport is not just a transport hub, but a living monument to aviation history. Founded on January 10, 1911, it is among the oldest commercial airports on the planet and remains the oldest operating international airport in Germany. Located just 8.5 km north of the city center, it has evolved from a modest airfield to the fifth-largest airport in the country.

In 1912, regular postal service was established here, and by 1913 the first passenger flights had begun. During World War I, the airport was converted into a military airbase, but after its conclusion it returned to civilian operation. The real boom began in the 1950s when Helmut Schmidt, the future Chancellor of West Germany, served as head of the transport department and laid the foundations for Hamburg's success as an aviation hub. Today, around 40,000 aviation specialists work here across approximately 300 companies.

Infrastructure and terminals

Modern Hamburg Airport features two passenger terminals connected to each other. Terminal 1 opened in 1991, and Terminal 2 was completed in 2005, which increased capacity to 15 million passengers per year. Both terminals are equipped with state-of-the-art aviation logistics: check-in areas, duty-free shops, business lounges, and passport control points for international flights.

The airport's runway infrastructure has a distinctive feature — the runways intersect each other, which limits capacity and makes further expansion of the airfield impossible. This is why in the 1960s there were serious discussions about relocating the airport to Kaltenkirchen near Kaltenkirchen, but the idea was ultimately abandoned.

Transport accessibility

There are several ways to reach Hamburg Airport. The fastest is the S-Bahn S1 line, which connects the airport to Hamburg Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) in just 25 minutes. Trains run at 10–20 minute intervals, and the fare is €3.10. This is the optimal option for those traveling from the city center or arriving by train.

For residents of neighboring areas, bus routes 26, 172, and 274 connect the airport with nearby metro stations and residential areas. Taxi and car-sharing services are also available — pick-up points are located right outside the terminals.

Parking and logistics

For those arriving by car, the airport offers over 12,000 parking spaces in multi-story garages and open-air lots. The official parking garages P1–P5 are located directly at Terminals 1 and 2. Parking P1 is just 150 meters from Terminal 1 and is divided into two zones: TERMINAL SMART (covered level) and HOLIDAY SMART (five levels for long-term parking).

Short-term parking rates start from €4 for 30 minutes. Long-term parking costs €60–100 per week, which is reasonable for those going on vacation and wanting to leave their car in a secure location.

Surroundings and hotels

Several hotels of various classes are located in close proximity to the airport. B&B Hotel Hamburg-Airport is just 800 meters away and offers modern soundproofed rooms with free WiFi. Other options include Boulevard Hotel Hamburg, Airport Plaza Hotel Hamburg, Courtyard by Marriott Hamburg Airport, and Novum Hotel Graf Moltke Hamburg. Most of them provide shuttle service to the terminals, which is convenient for early departures.
