Taoyuan International Airport — Online Webcam Traffic
Taiwan's Main Air Gateway
Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is the island's largest aviation hub, serving the capital Taipei and the entire northern region. The airport is located in Taoyuan County, approximately 40 kilometers west of downtown Taipei. Annual passenger traffic exceeds 45 million people, making it one of the key transport hubs in Southeast Asia. The live webcam allows real-time observation of aircraft movements on the runways.
History from Chiang Kai-shek to Taoyuan
The airport was opened on February 26, 1979 under the name Chiang Kai-shek International Airport. Construction was necessary to relieve the urban Taipei Songshan Airport, which had exhausted its expansion possibilities by that time. In 2006, the airport was renamed Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, reflecting its geographic location. Interestingly, the IATA code — TPE — comes from the name Taipei, although physically the airport is located in Taoyuan.
Architecture and Inspiration from Dulles
The architecture of Terminal 1 was inspired by the design of Washington Dulles International Airport. The building was designed by Taiwanese architect Cheng Jun-min and features a distinctive wavy roof. Terminal 2 opened in 2000 and complemented the infrastructure. Both terminals are connected by a system of moving walkways and shuttle trains, making transfers easier for passengers.
Terminal 3: The Future of the Airport
Currently, Terminal 3 is under active construction, designed by the firm RSHP (Richard Rogers Stirling Hadfield). The new terminal will increase the airport's capacity by 30% and include 126 additional aircraft stands. A second runway and a comprehensive transport hub are also planned. Upon completion, the airport will be able to handle up to 80 million passengers annually.
Transport Connection to Taipei
The airport is connected to Taipei by the high-speed Taoyuan Airport MRT line. Express trains cover the distance from the airport to Taipei Main Station in 35 minutes. Bus routes, taxi services, and transfer shuttles are also available. The airport grounds feature short-term and long-term parking, as well as hotels for transit passengers.
Airlines and Route Network
Taoyuan serves as a hub for the flagship carrier China Airlines and EVA Air. UNI Air and Tigerair Taiwan are also based here. The airport serves over 145 routes connecting 86 cities worldwide. International destinations include flights to Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asian countries, and North America.
What's Visible on the Camera
The camera is positioned with a view of the runway at Taoyuan International Airport. In the frame — a passenger aircraft on the taxiway, with city buildings and the hilly terrain of Taoyuan County visible in the background. In the upper right corner of the stream is the live broadcast indicator. Text information in Chinese and English indicates the airport name. The broadcast allows tracking aircraft movement, identifying aircraft types, and observing ground operations in real time.
