Savannah — the oldest city in Georgia

The city of Savannah is located in the southeastern United States, in the state of Georgia, on the banks of the river of the same name. It is the state's largest port and one of the most atmospheric cities in America. Savannah was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe and is the oldest city in Georgia. From the very beginning, it was conceived as a British colonial outpost, and its layout reflects the ambitions of its founders — wide streets, green squares, and a well-planned port infrastructure. Savannah, Georgia played an important role in US history. In 1779, the Siege of Savannah took place here — a major battle of the Revolutionary War involving French and American troops. The port city attracted merchants from around the world, and cotton became the main export commodity that determined the region's economic prosperity. Today, Savannah, Georgia is a living open-air museum where history meets modernity.

Historic District and Famous Squares

Savannah's Historic District is one of the largest national historic landmarks in the United States. The National Historic Landmark status was granted in 1966. It is a place where every block breathes history, and colonial-era architecture has been preserved in its original form. A unique feature of Savannah is its system of squares around which the city was built. Originally 4 squares were planned, today 22 have been preserved from the historical ones. Each square has its own history, character, and monuments. Chippewa Square, Wright Square, Monterey Square — these names are familiar to anyone interested in the history of the American South. Live oaks draped in Spanish moss create a unique atmosphere that makes Savannah recognizable among other US cities.

River Street Waterfront — Heart of the Port City

River Street is Savannah's calling card, a place where past and present intertwine. The cobblestone pavement is made from ballast stone originally used as ballast on ships arriving at Savannah's harbor from Europe. The buildings along the waterfront were originally cotton warehouses where cotton was brought for export. Today, these historic buildings house shops, restaurants, and bars. River Street is one of Savannah's most famous "haunted" locations. According to legends, the ghosts of workers who died in the cotton warehouses and sailors haunt this place. Savannah regularly appears on lists of the most "haunted" cities in the US, and dozens of ghost tours offer tourists a chance to explore the city's dark side.

Forsyth Park and Its Legendary Fountain

Forsyth Park is Savannah's main park, the city's green lungs and a gathering place for both locals and tourists. The park is named after Georgia Governor John Forsyth. Its territory spans several blocks in the southern part of the Historic District. The centerpiece of the park is the famous fountain. It was installed in 1858 and made of cast iron in New York. The fountain's design was created by John Howard and inspired by the work of French sculptor Michel Lienard, reminiscent of the fountains at Place de la Concorde in Paris. Originally, the fountain was painted with a brown texture to imitate Siena marble. Today it is painted white and has become a symbol of Savannah, Georgia — its image can be seen on postcards, paintings, and souvenirs.

Tybee Island and the Atlantic Coast

Several kilometers from downtown Savannah lies Tybee Island — a popular vacation spot and resort area on the Atlantic coast. The Tybee Island Lighthouse is one of the oldest and tallest lighthouses in Georgia: the first wooden lighthouse was built in 1733, and the stone tower was erected in 1773. The lighthouse is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a museum. The name "Tybee" comes from an Indian word meaning "salt." The island's beaches attract surfers and families, and the wide sandy strip allows for a secluded spot even during peak season. Savannah and Tybee Island are connected by a highway offering views of the marshes and waterways characteristic of coastal Georgia.

Climate and Weather in Savannah

Savannah is located in a humid subtropical climate zone. Summers here are hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C. Winters are mild with rare frosts — an ideal time for walking through the Historic District without exhausting heat. Spring and fall are especially pleasant: temperatures are comfortable, and nature blooms. The city is subject to tropical storms and hurricanes during the summer and fall months, but due to its location somewhat inland from the coast, Savannah usually avoids the strongest impacts. The port operates year-round, and the Savannah River remains an important transportation artery for the state of Georgia.
