Port Huron on the Border of Two Countries

Port Huron is located along the US-Canada border directly across from Sarnia, Ontario. The two cities are connected by the famous Blue Water Bridge, which is described as one of the most beautiful border crossings between the countries. Port Huron sits at the source of the St. Clair River at the southern end of Lake Huron. The St. Clair River flows from Lake Huron into Lake St. Clair, and then into Lake Erie via the Detroit River through the Detroit–St. Clair system, one of the busiest waterways on the international border.

Blue Water Bridge

Blue Water Bridge is a twin-span international bridge over the St. Clair River connecting Port Huron, Michigan (USA) and Point Edward, Ontario (Canada). The first bridge was completed and officially opened on October 8, 1938. The steel cantilever bridge with a total length of 6,392 feet (1,948 m) is located at the narrowest point of the river between Fort Gratiot and Point Edward on the international border. As of 2025, Blue Water Bridge has become the busiest trade corridor between Canada and the United States.

St. Clair River and Lake Huron

The St. Clair River forms part of the Detroit–St. Clair River system — one of the busiest waterways crossing the international border. Lake Huron is known for its collection of shipwrecks — from schooners lost during violent storms to steamers that collided in foggy waters. In October 1895, the steamer Africa, towing the schooner Severn with a cargo of coal, sank in Lake Huron on the way up the St. Clair River. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary contains 116 significant shipwrecks across 448 sq. miles (1,160 sq. km). The sanctuary was established in 2000 on Lake Huron.

Thomas Edison's Historical Legacy

In Port Huron, Thomas Edison spent his youth and began his career. The future inventor worked here as a newspaper boy on the railroad in Port Huron. The Thomas Edison Depot Museum is located in the historic Fort Gratiot depot, built in 1858 and opened on February 11, 2001.

Fort Gratiot Lighthouse

Fort Gratiot Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Michigan, located in Port Huron, guiding ships since 1829. The lighthouse is fully automated and operated by the United States Coast Guard, whose station is located near the facility in Port Huron.

Traditions and Festivals

Blue Water Fest in Port Huron features the Bayview Mackinac Race, Rotary parade, live concerts, and family entertainment in Port Huron. The Sturgeon Festival was launched in spring 2013 in Port Huron. Thousands of lake sturgeon gather annually under the Blue Water bridges for spawning, making Port Huron one of the best places to observe these "giants of the Great Lakes" in Port Huron. During the Sturgeon Festival, visitors can see live sturgeon both on shore and aboard the excursion boat "Huron Lady" during a 1.5-hour cruise with an aquarium and biologists in Port Huron.
