History of New London: from whaling port to naval capital

New London is a city whose fate is inseparably linked to the sea. In 1646, John Winthrop the Younger founded the first English settlement in eastern Connecticut here. By the 18th century, the port had become one of the key trading hubs of New England. But the true heyday came in the 19th century, when whaling became the main driving force of the local economy. New London was among the three busiest whaling ports in the world, alongside Nantucket and New Bedford. Whaling ships set off on month-long expeditions, and the harbor was always bustling — barrels of whale oil were loaded, ships repaired, and provisions traded.

In 1709, "the governor's printer" Thomas Short moved to the city, turning New London into the information center of the colony.
