History of Marietta: from founding to the present day

Marietta is one of the oldest cities in Georgia, with roots dating back to the first third of the 19th century. December 19, 1834 the Georgia General Assembly officially recognized the existence of this settlement, laying the foundation for its transformation into one of Atlanta's largest suburbs. Today, the city is home to 60,972 people according to the 2020 census, making it a significant populated place in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

The city is located 15 miles northwest of Atlanta and serves as the county seat of Cobb County. This location historically made Marietta an important transportation hub and commercial center of the region. The oldest continuously inhabited residential building in the city — the Octon House, built in 1838 — still stands as a testament to the early days of the settlement.

Marietta Square: the heart of the city

The historic center is concentrated around Marietta Square — a traditional town square with Glover Park at its center. This is where the past meets the present: Victorian buildings stand alongside modern restaurants and shops. During the Civil War, the park on the square was used as a militia training ground, and at the north end of the park there was a well with water for people and horses.

Today, Marietta Square is the center of local events, farmers' markets, and cultural festivals. Here is located the Marietta History Center, housed in the historic Kennesaw House, built in 1845. The center's four galleries feature exhibits telling about the rich history of the city and all of Cobb County.

Cultural life and festivals

The city lives a rich cultural life. Marietta has theaters, museums, and 18 parks, creating many opportunities for leisure for residents and guests. Various events regularly take place on the square and in its surroundings: art events, zombie walks, food festivals, concerts, and Stockman's summer markets on Sundays.

One of the most significant annual events is the Georgia Food + Wine Festival — a celebration of the region's culinary scene with tastings from chefs, wines, and spirits. This event attracts gourmets from all over Georgia and neighboring states, highlighting the city's growing reputation as the gastronomic capital of Atlanta's suburbs.

Nature and parks: Kennesaw Mountain and the Chattahoochee River

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the natural riches of the region. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is located about 3 miles from Marietta Square and preserves a major Civil War battlefield from the Atlanta Campaign. This is the third largest park in the Atlanta metropolitan area, part of the U.S. National Park Service. At the top of Kennesaw Mountain, you can observe wildlife, participate in historical reenactments, and hike.

Another key natural attraction is the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. And the Chattahoochee Nature Center has become a popular place for family outdoor recreation, offering educational programs and walks along ecological trails.

Gastronomic scene: 873 restaurants for every taste

The city has established itself as a gastronomic destination for Atlanta's gourmets. According to TripAdvisor data, Marietta has 873 restaurants offering incredibly diverse cuisine. Here you can find traditional southern dishes — biscuits, barbecue, "meat and three" plates, and soul food, as well as international cuisines: tacos, Thai curry, sushi, and Korean food.

On Marietta Square are located establishments such as The Vine & Tap with wine flights and gastronomic cuisine, Glover Park Brewery with craft beer, and Douceur de France with exquisite French desserts. One of the local restaurants received an average rating of 4.5 stars and more than 20,000 reviews, and was also featured on the Food Network in the show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

Why Marietta is the best suburb of Atlanta

The city stands out among other populated places in Georgia with its southern charm and historical attractions. The historic center with picturesque streets lined with Victorian buildings is the heart of Marietta and a magnet for tourists. Families choose this place for excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, and developed infrastructure.

Water entertainment enthusiasts will be interested in Six Flags White Water — the largest water park in Georgia, occupying more than 25 acres. This place attracts visitors not only from Marietta but from the entire Atlanta metropolitan area, especially during the hot summer months.
