Runcorn: a city on the banks of the Mersey

Runcorn is a city where industrial heritage meets medieval history. Located on the southern bank of the River Mersey, it is part of the unitary authority of Halton with a population of 125,700 and forms part of the Liverpool City Region. Today Norton Priory is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and museum, featuring ruins of the abbey from the 12th–16th centuries with an 18th-century country house.

The plan included new residential areas, dedicated pedestrian walkways, a "Busway" — a road exclusively for buses forming a figure-of-eight pattern, extensive green spaces, separate industrial zones and a new city centre. The architecture of this period has been described as "a megastructure possessing tense musculature" — an unusual characteristic for urban development.

Runcorn Shopping City was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1972 and claims to be the first shopping centre in the United Kingdom. Today it remains Runcorn's main shopping area with around 6.5 million visits per year.

Chemical industry: from boom to transformation

Runcorn's chemical and shipbuilding industries once thrived, and this legacy is visible in the canals, railways and innovative bridges.
