History of Kurtamysh: from a settlement beyond the Tobol to a town

Kurtamysh is one of those quiet Ural towns whose history dates back to the mid-18th century. On July 15, 1745 peasant Anton Loskutnikov received a charter from the Iset Province to establish a settlement on the Kurtamysh River at the confluence of the Khmelevka River. From that moment began the life of the settlement, which later became the administrative center of a vast district.

The town's name carries the imprint of the Turkic linguistic heritage of the Trans-Ural region. "Kurtamysh" translates as "winding river" — from the words "kurt" (worm, winding) and "mysh" (river, water). The settlement was named after the Kurtamysh River, a left tributary of the Tobol, on whose banks it grew.

In 1756, the settlement became an administrative center, forming the Kurtamysh District. Kurtamysh officially gained town status in 1956, although there was a brief town period in 1919–1924. Today it is a quiet district center where historical heritage coexists with modern life — which can be observed through Kurtamysh webcams online.

Church of Peter and Paul: the spiritual heart of the town

The first thing that catches the eye when getting acquainted with Kurtamysh is the majestic Church of Peter and Paul, towering over the town's landscape. The wooden church began to be built immediately after the settlement's founding, and on April 29, 1753 it was consecrated. The stone church appeared later — between 1802 and 1808.

This is one of the oldest churches in the region, over 200 years old. The main shrine of the temple is a copy of the miraculous Abalak Icon of the Mother of God, a copy from the Abalak Monastery of the Tobolsk Governorate. According to legend, a widow brought the icon to Kurtamysh in gratitude for healing. The second town church — the Resurrection Church — was blown up after the revolution, and the Peter and Paul Church remained the only reminder of the town's Orthodox past.

Today, the Church of Peter and Paul is not only an active temple but also an architectural monument attracting lovers of antiquity. Kurtamysh webcams allow you to see this architectural landmark at any time of day — dawn lighting particularly emphasizes the silhouette of the church against the sky.

Natural wealth of the Kurtamysh District

The Kurtamysh District is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful in the Trans-Ural region. The central part of the district is divided by the Kurtamysh River, along whose banks pine forests and birch groves stretch. Above the town is a large reservoir creating a special microclimate of this area.

The true decoration of the region is a group of large lakes stretching in a chain along the ancient channel of the Tobol. Gorkoye-Uzkovo is recognized as a natural monument — its strongly alkaline bicarbonate water has unique properties. Nearby are Zemkovo, Mironovskoye, Sukhanovskoye, Fedoseyevskoye, Bolshoye, Medvezhye, Osinovo Zaymishche. The bottom sediments of many of these lakes have healing properties, attracting eco-tourism enthusiasts here.

Shady pine forests, extensive river valleys, solonetz meadows and raised bogs create a unique landscape. Kurtamysh webcams online provide an opportunity to appreciate this natural beauty without leaving home — views are especially impressive in autumn, when birch groves turn golden.

Main streets and architectural landmarks

The central artery of the town is the wide Lenin Avenue, the main street of Kurtamysh. Here the public life of the town is concentrated: administrative buildings, shops, places of recreation. At one of the avenue's intersections stands a house with wooden gates with carved caps on the pillars — a true example of Ural wooden architecture, evoking antiquity.

The architectural appearance of Kurtamysh is a mix of pre-revolutionary merchant houses, Soviet buildings and modern structures. A walk through the town center via webcam allows you to appreciate this historical layering: from classical facades with stucco to the strict lines of constructivism.

Of particular interest are buildings associated with merchant families who once determined the economic life of the district. Houses with carved window frames, wrought-iron porches and preserved outbuildings are living testimonies to the trading past of Kurtamysh, through which important commercial routes passed.

Local history museum and cultural heritage

The Kurtamysh Local History Museum named after N.D. Tomin is located in the former house of the Shakhrin brothers — another monument of merchant architecture. The museum preserves the history of the region from ancient times to the present day: archaeological finds, documents, photographs, household items.

Of particular interest are exhibitions dedicated to the life of Ural peasants and merchants, as well as materials on the history of dekulakization and repression, which did not bypass the Kurtamysh District. The museum is an important center for preserving local memory and identity.

In the vicinity of Kurtamysh is the Shmakovsky Tsar's Kurgan — an archaeological monument testifying to the ancient settlement of these lands. This kurgan is part of an extensive cultural layer that still awaits its researchers.

What the cameras show in the town
