1 camerasHistory of Khandygа: from a camp settlement to the gateway of eastern Yakutia
The settlement of Khandygа appeared on the map of Yakutia in 1939 as a point during the construction of the highway from the Aldan River to Oymyakon. The founder of the settlement is considered to be the head of road construction M. K. Karpov. In those years, it was a point on the map where civilization ended and the taiga began.
In 1941–1943, the Aldan corrective labor camp of Dalstroi operated here, whose prisoners built Khandygа and the Khandygа–Kadykchan road. In 1943–1944, most of the population moved to Adygalakh, and the settlement was abandoned. Revival began in 1948, when geologists from "Dalstroi" began arriving here and the Aldan exploration district was established.
AlSib Airfield: the sky route through Khandygа
From the autumn of 1942, at the 4th kilometer from the settlement, the filling of the runway of the "AlSib" (Alaska–Siberia) route began. In the summer of 1943, the construction of the airfield was completed. Khandygа airfield became part of the legendary air route built for ferrying military aircraft under Lend-Lease. On November 1, 2023, the airport turned 80 years old.
Today the airfield continues to operate, connecting Khandygа with Yakutsk and other settlements in the region. For many residents, it is the only connection to the "mainland" during periods when roads become impassable.
Gateway to eastern Yakutia: a transport hub on the Kolyma Highway
Khandygа is called the "Gateway to Eastern Yakutia" and is a major transport hub through which the R-504 (Kolyma) highway passes. It is from Khandygа that the old mileage of the Kolyma Highway begins. The settlement is located on the bank of the Aldan River, 308 kilometers east of Yakutsk.
There is no railway here — passengers to Yakutsk and Magadan are carried only by private minibus operators. A ferry crossing across the Aldan River operates, which becomes especially important during the ice drift and freeze-up periods.
Architectural curiosities: flying saucers in the Yakut taiga
The main attraction of Khandygа is the "Manchaary" culture house, built in 2013 in the shape of a giant flying saucer. This building has become the calling card of the settlement and one of the most unusual architectural structures in Yakutia.
Nearby is the building of the children's aesthetic center, shaped like a flying saucer with aliens from deep space. These two buildings create a unique architectural ensemble that contrasts with the surrounding taiga and gives Khandygа a futuristic appearance.
Khandygа climate: life at the extreme
Khandygа has a sharply continental climate. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of −39.6 °C. Frosts here can reach minus 50 and below. Summer is short but hot — temperatures can rise to +30 °C and above.
The temperature difference between winter and summer reaches 80–90 degrees. This is one of the most extreme climate regimes on the planet where people live and work year-round. Life expectancy in Khandygа is on average 70 years.
Life in Khandygа today: population and daily life
The population of Khandygа settlement in 2026 is about 5,360 people. In Soviet times, the population reached 10,000 people, but after the collapse of the USSR, many moved to the central regions of Russia.
Today Khandygа is a modern settlement with developed infrastructure: schools, a hospital, shops, a culture house. Residents are engaged in mining, transport, trade, and reindeer herding. The builders sought to provide the settlement with their own produce — as early as 1940, the Saydy village council received permission to plant potatoes on a small plot on Bordoy Island.
Attractions and interesting places
In addition to the culture houses shaped like flying saucers, Khandygа has several monuments related to the history of the Kolyma Highway and the AlSib airfield. The settlement is a starting point for tourists traveling along the Kolyma Highway towards Magadan.
Around Khandygа is untouched taiga, rivers rich in fish, and wildlife. This is a place where you can see the northern lights, observe reindeer, and experience the real Siberian taiga.
