Podul Minciunilor (The Bridge of Lies) is a legendary pedestrian bridge in the center of Sibiu, crossing Strada Ocnei between the Little Square and Huet Square. Built between 1859 and 1860 by the Friedrich Hütte company, it became the first cast-iron bridge in Romania and the first bridge without supporting pylons. The bridge is 10.40 meters long and 6 meters wide. The cast-iron railings are decorated with eight panels featuring Gothic radial ornamentation.

The name comes from the German verb "liegen" (to lie down), which sounded similar to "lügen" (to lie/tell lies). Since it was the first bridge without supports ("lying"), locals began calling it the "Bridge of Lies." There are many legends: it is believed that the bridge can detect whether someone is lying and makes strange sounds as if it's about to collapse. Another legend tells of military academy cadets who met girls here and made promises they never intended to keep.

European Capital of Culture: How Sibiu Changed Its Destiny

In 2007, Sibiu shared the title of European Capital of Culture with Luxembourg. This was the first time after the fall of the Berlin Wall that a city from Eastern Europe received this title. The program's theme — "city of culture, city of cultures" — reflected the blending of different cultures in the Transylvanian region. Near Sibiu are villages with fortified churches (Biertan, Valea Viilor), included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. The historic center of Sibiu has been on the UNESCO tentative list since 2004 but has not yet been officially included. In 2019, the city was named a European Region of Gastronomy, and in 2021 it hosted the European Wandering Capital event — the largest European event in walking and ecotourism.
