History of Sittard: from Roman times to the present day

Sittard is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, with roots dating back to Roman times. The city received its rights in 1243, making it a true custodian of centuries-old heritage of the province of Limburg. Over the centuries, Sittard changed hands: from 1400 to 1794 it belonged to the Duchy of Jülich, then from 1798 to 1814 it was part of Napoleonic France, and only finally annexed to the Netherlands in 1867. Since January 1, 2001, Sittard together with the cities of Geleen and Born has formed the unified municipality of Sittard-Geleen, while maintaining its unique identity.

Geographical location: at the crossroads of three countries

Sittard is located in the south of the province of Limburg in close proximity to the borders with Belgium and Germany. The distance to the German border is only 3 km, making the city a kind of crossroads of cultures and trade routes. This location over the centuries has shaped the multinational character of the local population and left its mark on the architecture and traditions of Sittard. Today it is a dynamic city where Dutch practicality meets German thoroughness and Belgian hospitality.

Historical center: churches, squares and architecture

The historic core of Sittard amazes with its concentration of religious buildings — there are at least five churches in the city center, each with its own unique history. The Church of St. Michael, built in Baroque style, is part of a Dominican monastery founded in the 17th century. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart dominates the cityscape, while numerous chapels and chapels create the unique silhouette of Sittard. Narrow medieval streets, cobblestones and ancient facades transport visitors to the atmosphere of past centuries.

Fortuna Sittard Stadium: the sporting life of the city

Fortuna Sittard football club plays in the Eredivisie — the top division of the Netherlands, and its home arena has become one of the modern landmarks of the city. The stadium was built in 1999 on the site of a former industrial zone and holds between 12,500 and 12,800 spectators. It replaced the old De Baandert stadium and became a symbol of Sittard's sporting revival. On match days, the city fills with the energy of fans, and the surroundings of the arena turn into a true festival of football culture.

Collenberg Park: the green lungs of Sittard

The city park of Sittard, developed between 1921 and 1927, represents a harmonious combination of natural landscape and landscape design. The park offers picturesque gardens, ponds and winding footpaths, creating ideal conditions for walks, picnics and outdoor recreation. This is a place of attraction for both locals and visitors, who appreciate it for its cozy atmosphere and the beauty of the natural surroundings. In the park you can watch birds, enjoy the shade of ancient trees and take a break from the city bustle.

Market Square Grote Markt: the heart of the city

The market square, known as Grote Markt, is a vibrant center of public life in Sittard. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, cozy cafes and terraces, where locals and tourists enjoy coffee and traditional cuisine. In the center of the square rises a fountain decorated with a statue of Silvius Brabo — a legendary warrior throwing the hand of a giant, which is a reference to the Belgian symbol. Markets, festive events and street festivals are regularly held here, turning the square into a true artery of city life.
