Oostkapelle: Eastern Jewel of Zeeland

The village of Oostkapelle stretches along the northern coast of Walcheren island in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It's a place where historic farmhouses neighbor elite beach clubs, and medieval bell towers rise above dune landscapes. The population is around two and a half thousand, but in summer the number of vacationers increases manifold. To experience this atmosphere in advance, simply open the Oostkapelle webcams online.

Origin of the Name: Chapel in the East

The etymology is simple and poetic: oost means "east," kapelle means "chapel." According to local tradition, the name is associated with a medieval chapel dedicated to Saint Willibrord — an 8th-century Anglo-Saxon missionary who brought Christianity to the pagan lands of Frisia. The chapel stood in the eastern part of the settlement, giving the entire community its name.

Interestingly, Oostkapelle has a "sister" — the village of Westkapelle, located on the western end of Walcheren. Both settlements originated around chapels, and both became resorts, although Oostkapelle is traditionally considered more tranquil and upscale.

Architectural Heritage: St. Willibrord Church

The main historical landmark is the Sint-Willibrorduskerk. This late Gothic church was built over the 15th and 16th centuries. Its bell tower (belfort) is a typical Zeeland type — not attached to the main structure but standing separately or partially integrated.

During World War II, the church was severely damaged by bombing and subsequent flooding. Restoration took years, and today it again serves as the spiritual center of the community. Around the church, historic farmhouses with characteristic Zeeland facades have been preserved — whitewashed gables, red tile roofs, and massive doors.

War and Water: Operation Infatuate

November 1944 was a turning point for the entire Walcheren island. Operation Infatuate — the British invasion aimed at opening the port of Antwerp for Allied supply. To dislodge German garrisons, the RAF carried out precise strikes on the dikes, turning the island into a vast shallow lake.

Oostkapelle was in the flooding zone. Residents were evacuated, many homes destroyed or severely damaged. Liberation came with Canadian and British forces by the end of November, but draining and reconstruction stretched into 1945–1946. Today, a war memorial in the village center commemorates those events, and Atlantic Wall bunkers in the dunes have become silent witnesses to that era.

Dunes and Nature: Natura 2000 Landscape

The coastal strip of Oostkapelle is part of the extensive Zeeland dune system. The area is included in the European Natura 2000 network as an important nature reserve. Here you can see sand dunes overgrown with marram grass, sea buckthorn thickets, and pine plantings that stabilize the slopes.

Nearby is the Domburger Slikken nature area — salt marshes attracting thousands of migratory birds. For tourists, ornithological trails have been laid out, where from observation towers you can watch sandpipers, brent geese, and other species.

Beach Culture: Blue Flag and Strandpaviljoens

Oostkapelle beach is one of the most prestigious in Zeeland. The wide sandy stretch extends for several kilometers, marked with the international Blue Flag for cleanliness and infrastructure quality. In summer, strandpaviljoens operate here — beach clubs with restaurants, recreation zones, and children's playgrounds.

In spring and autumn, the beach transforms: crowds of tourists disappear, and only surfers, kitesurfers, and lovers of long walks remain. It's during these seasons that the webcams show Oostkapelle in all its pristine beauty — deserted dunes, the gray North Sea, and sunsets you don't have to share with anyone.

Resort Life: Bicycles and Estates

Oostkapelle is part of Walcheren's cycling network. From here, you can easily reach Veere, Middelburg, or Domburg via special routes laid through dunes and pastures. For family recreation, the Recreatiecentrum De Valk operates with a pool and sports grounds.

In the dune area, historic estates — landgoederen — surrounded by parks have been preserved. Some are open to visitors, others remain private, but their silhouettes against the sea create that very recognizable Zeeland landscape that tourists call "the Dutch version of Normandy."

Which Cameras Show the City

This page features Oostkapelle webcams — both panoramic cameras installed on elevations and beach cameras facing the sea. With their help, you can assess the weather before a trip, check beach occupancy, or simply observe the life of a quiet Dutch resort in real time.

Choose your stream: if interested in the historic center — cameras with views of Sint-Willibrorduskerk and farmhouses; for sea panoramas — beach angles. Regardless of choice, Oostkapelle appears as it is: an eastern chapel facing the North Sea.
