Groede — the Artist Village of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Groede is more than just a dot on the map of the Dutch province of Zeeland. Located 5 km north of Oostburg in the municipality of Sluis, this village has earned a reputation as "the number one artist village" in all of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Narrow streets, historic facades, and a creative atmosphere — here every house seems to tell its own story. For those who want to feel this spirit in advance, Groede webcams online offer a view of the main square and surroundings in real time.

From Medieval Maps to Military Bunkers

Groede's history goes back centuries — the village was already marked on Peter Pourbus's 1571 map of the Liberty of Bruges. But the most dramatic chapters were written in the 20th century. During World War II, the German army built Stützpunkt Groede — an artillery post with 11 bunkers, disguised as a cozy Dutch village. Today, the site hosts Groede Podium — a free playground with friendly donkeys, where history intertwines with everyday life.

Grote Kerk: 67 Bells and Brabantine Gothic

The heart of Groede is the Grote Kerk on the main square Markt. This Brabantine Gothic church was built from 1367 to 1470 on the site of an earlier Romanesque church, remains of which were discovered during excavations. Today, the Grote Kerk is adorned with a red cross indicating its historical significance and serves as an exhibition space, freely accessible in summer. But the main pride is the carillon of 67 bells, installed in 1966. The largest bell was cast in 1999, weighs 9.83 tons (note "E") and is the largest swinging bell in the Netherlands.

Slijkstraatje and the Craftsmen's Atmosphere

The picturesque street Slijkstraatje is the very essence of Groede. Full of nostalgia and culture, it brings together workshops, cafés, an old bakery, and Brouwerslokaal. The village center also features Herberg De Natte Pij pub, the old bakery, and Galerie Groede. Walking through these streets, you understand why Groede is called an artist village: every corner here inspires.

Nature Around: Waterdunen and Polders

Beyond the village lies the Waterdunen nature reserve — an ideal place for hiking and cycling through dunes and polders. It is part of the municipality of Groede, where the typical Zeeland landscape reveals itself in all its glory. The Groede online stream allows you to appreciate the scale of the surrounding scenery and plan your route before arriving in Zeeland.
