Durbe — a tiny town with a big history

There are cities that amaze with skyscrapers and million-strong populations. The battle that changed the course of conquests

Summer of 1260. The Baltic is engulfed in crusades — the Teutonic and Livonian Orders are systematically subjugating the lands of Curonians, Semigallians, and other Baltic peoples. It would seem that the military machine of knights is invincible. But on July 13, 1260, a battle took place near Durbe that went down in history as the Battle of Durbe.

The forces of the Curonians and Semigallians defeated the combined forces of both orders. This defeat became a catalyst for a massive uprising of Prussians and Curonians that halted the crusaders' eastward advance for decades. For Latvia, this event is one of the symbols of resistance and the struggle for freedom. Today, a memorial stone stands at the site of the battle, and archaeologists find traces of those battles in the surrounding area.

Durbe Manor — a revived estate

The main attraction of the town is Durbe Castle, which is actually a former manor house. Originally built in 1671, it was rebuilt many times and acquired its current appearance between 1820 and 1923. The architecture is strict classicism, without excessive pomp, but with dignity.

Zigfrīds Meierovics stood at the origins of Latvian diplomacy, represented the young republic in the League of Nations, and fought for international recognition of Latvia.
