1 camerasGeographical location and altitude of the pass
Tonale Pass is a high-mountain pass in the Italian Alps that connects two major valleys of northern Italy. The saddle is located at an altitude of 1883 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest passes in the region accessible by car. On the western side, the Camonica Valley, belonging to Lombardy, adjoins Tonale, and on the eastern side lies the Sole Valley in the province of Trento. This strategic location has for centuries determined the significance of the pass as a transport corridor between the north and south of the country.
The mountain range in which Tonale lies is part of the Rhaetian Alps — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. The landscape here was shaped by glaciers over millennia, and the relief still bears the imprint of ancient glaciation. The slopes of the pass drop steeply on both sides, while the saddle itself features a relatively flat area where the resort infrastructure is located.
Presena Glacier and summer skiing
One of the unique features of Tonale is the Presena Glacier (Ghiacciaio Presena), located at an altitude of 2700–3000 meters. This is one of the few glaciers in Italy where skiing is available year-round. Even in summer, when heat sets in on the plains, lifts continue to operate on the Presena Glacier, and skiers from across Europe come here for high-altitude training.
The Presena Glacier is not only a sports venue but also an important climate indicator. Like many Alpine glaciers, it is retreating due to global warming, and special methods are used here to protect the slopes from melting. You can observe the condition of the glacier and the ski infrastructure through Tonale webcams online — they show the slopes in real time and allow you to assess weather conditions at altitude.
Traces of the "White War" — World War I at the pass
Tonale holds a special place in Italian military history. During World War I, the front line between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire ran through here. This section of the conflict went down in history as the "White War" (Guerra Bianca) — combat operations at altitudes above 3000 meters in conditions of extreme cold, avalanches, and glaciers.
Italian troops held the western side of the pass, while Austro-Hungarian troops held the eastern side. Soldiers of both armies fought not only each other but the elements: frostbite, avalanches, and snowstorms claimed more lives than bullets. To this day, traces of that war are found on the slopes of Tonale — weapons, equipment, and sometimes the remains of the fallen. In 2024, the remains of 12 Austro-Hungarian soldiers in a mass grave were discovered at the pass, reminding us of the tragic history of these places.
Military ossuary and memorials
At the pass itself stands the Tonale Military Ossuary (Sacrario militare del Tonale) — a memorial dedicated to Italian soldiers who died in the battles for the pass. It was erected during the fascist period as a monument to the heroism of the Alpine troops. The ossuary has become a place of remembrance and pilgrimage for descendants of veterans and anyone interested in the military history of the Alps.
Near the memorial, preserved trenches, fortifications, and the Paradiso Tunnel (Galleria Paradiso) remain, carved into rock and ice during the war. The tunnel was used to move troops and supply positions protected from artillery fire. Today these sites are open to visitors and are part of the military-historical route through the pass.
Path of Peace and tourist routes
In neighboring Vermiglio, there is a War Museum dedicated to the "White War" in the Alps, and across the entire Trentino region runs the "Path of Peace" (Sentiero della Pace) — an extensive network of tourist routes through World War I sites. The trails pass through former positions, field hospitals, and fortifications that have become open-air museums.
Tonale serves as one of the key points on this route. Tourists come here to see with their own eyes the conditions in which mountain troops fought a century ago. In the summer months, the pass becomes a starting point for hiking and cycling along mountain trails, and Tonale webcams allow you to assess conditions on the trails and the weather before heading into the mountains.
Ponte di Legno — Tonale ski resort
In winter, Tonale Pass becomes the center of one of the largest ski areas in the region. The Ponte di Legno — Tonale ski zone offers over 100 kilometers of ski runs of varying difficulty. The slopes are predominantly north-facing, ensuring good snow cover preservation well into spring.
The resort includes modern lifts, freeride runs, snowboard parks, and special beginner zones. Connections to neighboring valleys through the pass make Tonale part of an extensive ski area where you can ski for several days without repeating routes. The resort infrastructure includes hotels, restaurants, and ski schools operating from December to April, and on the Presena Glacier — also in the summer months.
Traditional cuisine of the region
The food culture around Tonale reflects a blend of Lombard and Trentino-Alto Adige traditions. Local taverns serve canederli — bread dumplings with cheese and smoked meats, barley soup (zuppa d'orzo), goulash, and strudel borrowed from Austrian culinary tradition. Popular are strauben — fried dough, speck (cured pork), black bread with fennel, and schüttelbrot — crispy bread eaten with cheese and pickled vegetables.
The wine list of the region features Teroldego red wine (DOC Trentino) — a rich drink with aromas of cherry and spices that pairs perfectly with mountain cuisine. After a day on the slopes or a mountain trail, there is nothing better than sitting in a mountain hut with a bowl of hot soup and a glass of local wine, gazing at the snow-capped peaks of Tonale.
