Italy San Benedetto del Tronto

History of San Benedetto del Tronto: from church to royal decree

This seaside town has a rich history reflecting the typical changes of Italian communes. In 1860, the Alpine sharpshooters (Cacciatori delle Alpi) liberated the city from church rule, which became a turning point in its fate. Later, the royal decree granting San Benedetto the title of "del Tronto" was issued in 1896 in honor of the river on which the settlement stands. And in 1936, the village of Porto d'Ascoli was annexed to the city of San Benedetto, significantly expanding its borders.

Riviera delle Palme: palms, promenade, and sea

San Benedetto del Tronto is rightfully called the capital of the Riviera delle Palme (Palm Riviera) due to the abundance of palm trees along the coast. The San Benedetto promenade stretches for 8 km with a bike and pedestrian path between the sea and the city, surrounded by two rows of palm trees. It is an ideal place for walks where you can observe the rhythm of resort life. If you want to see this atmosphere in advance, San Benedetto del Tronto online webcams will allow you to appreciate the scale of the promenade and prepare for your trip.

Gualtieri Tower and medieval heritage

One of the main symbols is the Gualtieri Tower (Torre dei Gualtieri) — one of the oldest structures in the city, built in the 12th–13th century. It is 15 meters high and located in Piazza Sacconi in the highest part of the Old Town. Historically, the Gualtieri Tower served as a watchtower and is a symbol of the city. Nearby is the Church of the Abbey of Saint Benedict the Martyr (Chiesa Abbaziale di San Benedetto Martire) located in the medieval core of the city, Paese Alto.

Art Nouveau architecture and museum on the sea

In addition to the medieval walls, the city is famous for its Art Nouveau (Liberty) architecture, including early 20th-century villas (villini Liberty). Another key attraction is the Museum of Art on the Sea (MAM, Museo d'Arte sul Mare) — one of the city's key attractions. Also here stand the monument to the seagull Jonathan (Monumento al gabbiano Jonathan) and the monument to the fisherman (Monumento al Pescatore) — iconic sculptures of the promenade. And the San Benedetto lighthouse was officially commissioned in 1957, illuminating the way for ships.

Cuisine and maritime traditions

Fishing has historically played an important role, which is reflected in the gastronomy. The traditional dish is brodetto alla sanbenedettese, a fish soup with tomatoes and vinegar, which differs from recipes in other regions. You can try it in restaurants overlooking the port.
