Ancient Roots and the Origin of the Name

The name Fregene has ancient roots — it derives from the ancient Etruscan and Roman settlement of Fregenae, a maritime city in ancient Etruria. This settlement was located between Alsium and the mouth of the Tiber, and its name is mentioned by Strabo, Pliny the Elder, and in the Roman "Itineraria" — road records of the empire. So when you look at modern Fregene, you are literally looking at a place that has existed for over two thousand years.

Modern Fregene is located in the municipality of Fiumicino, 30 km from the historic center of Rome, on the Tyrrhenian coast between Maccarese and the mouth of the Arrone stream. Until 1992, Fregene was part of the municipality of Rome (formerly Municipio XIV), and only later received its current administrative affiliation.

From Fishing Village to Bohemian Resort

The urbanization of modern Fregene began in the 1950s, when Romans started buying second homes here en masse — seaside cottages. Between 1950 and the 1980s, this place became a summer residence for Rome's literary, film, and political intelligentsia. Writer Alberto Moravia had his beach house here, and Federico Fellini shot scenes from the cult film "8½" on a beach similar to Fregene's. This bohemian atmosphere is still felt in the town — a leisurely pace of life, conversations over lunch about literature and politics, the scent of pines and sea.

The Pine Grove — A Natural Heritage

One of Fregene's main attractions is the monumental pine grove (Pinus pinea), which is one of the oldest stands of this species in the world. Dendroecological studies have shown that individual trees reach 174 years of age at breast height. These majestic stone pines with umbrella-shaped canopies create a unique microclimate — even on the hottest day, there is pleasant shade and healing air rich in phytoncides.

Between the pine forest of Fregene and the WWF Macchiagrande reserve lies the "Fregene oak forest" — 20 hectares of greenery, closed to cars and designed for walking and relaxation. This is an ideal place for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the nature of the Lazio coast.

The Beach and the Tyrrhenian Sea

Fregene is famous for its wide and long sandy beach, which offers some of the best free beaches and beach clubs near Rome. The beach is 30 km from the city center and easily accessible by public transport. In the summer months, life buzzes here — families with children, youth groups, couples at sunset.

One of the most stylish places on the coast is the Singita Miracle Beach club with a relaxed atmosphere, comfortable sun loungers, cocktails, and sunsets over the Tyrrhenian Sea. You can spend an entire day here without leaving the beach area — from morning coffee to evening aperitivo.

Local Cuisine and Restaurants on the Sand

The gastronomic scene of Fregene revolves around fresh seafood and Roman culinary traditions. The restaurant "Il Sogno del Mare" is located right on the sand — tables are set on the coast with sea views, and the menu features fresh seafood, including paccheri tricolore pasta. A good breeze and the sound of waves complement the meal.

Another iconic spot is "Spiaggia dei Coqui", which serves traditional Roman pastas: carbonara, gricia (like carbonara but without egg), as well as pizza — all on the beach. The restaurants "Rosario" and "Albos Club" specialize in raw fish: sea urchins, oysters, baccalà carpaccio with vegetables and caramelized onions. A meal for two with wine on the Lazio coast typically costs €50–60.

What to See and Do

The main street of Fregene is Via Castellammare, along which are located the shops, cafes, and restaurants of the resort town. It's an artery where you can stroll on foot, feeling the pulse of local life. In the vicinity of the town is the "Adventure Park" for active recreation and several nature reserves, including the WWF Oasis of Macchiagrande.

Fregene is accessible by train — the Maccarese-Fregene station is located on the Tyrrhenian railway, as well as via the A12 motorway (Fregene-Maccarese exit). This makes the town a convenient day trip from Rome or a place for a longer stay on the coast.

Resort Town Atmosphere

Fregene is a place where time slows down. In the morning — a run on the beach or a walk in the pine grove, during the day — lunch on the sand with views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the evening — sunset with a glass of wine. There is no hustle and bustle of a big city here, but everything you need for a comfortable vacation: good restaurants, beach clubs, nature trails, and proximity to Rome.

Fregene webcams allow you to feel this atmosphere even if you are far from the Lazio coast. Simply select a stream to see the beach, pine grove, or main street of the town — and for a few minutes, transport yourself to summer Italy.
