1 camerasThe Tisza River — the city's artery
Tiszalök stands on the left bank of the Tisza River where the Northern Great Plain meets the bend of one of Hungary's main waterways. The city grew up around a ferry crossing and a fishing harbour, but its modern appearance was shaped by a major mid-20th-century engineering project — the Tiszalök Hydroelectric Power Plant, the largest on the Tisza. Today Tiszalök is a quiet town in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county with a population of about 5,500 people, where the interests of power engineers, anglers and tourists heading to the Tokaj vineyards intersect. The historic centre has retained the layout of a market settlement, and the reservoir has been turned into a recreational area.
The Tisza River here is not just a geographical feature but a working artery. The flow is regulated by the dam, and former floodplain meadows have been flooded by a reservoir covering an area of around 125 km². Local residents have grown accustomed to two Tisza rivers: the wild one that floods downstream in spring, and the calm, lake-like one in front of the city. Thanks to webcams, you can observe the dynamics of the reservoir water level and traffic on the bridge connecting the two banks.
Tiszalök Hydroelectric Power Plant: a mid-20th-century legacy
The dam and the Tiszalök HPP dominate the urban landscape. Construction took place from 1950 to 1956, and the station became the first large hydroelectric power plant on the Tisza River. The dam is about 350 metres long, and the installed capacity of the generators is approximately 12.5 MW. This is not a record by European standards, but for Hungary, which lacks large mountain rivers, the facility remains a significant source of renewable energy.
The architectural appearance of the station is a typical example of industrial modernism of the post-war era: laconic forms, concrete structures, functional aesthetics. Webcams aimed at the dam allow you to see the operating water conduits and the water release schedule, which depends on seasonal floods and the needs of the power grid.
Historic centre and market square
The heart of Tiszalök is the elongated market square (Fő tér), around which public life is concentrated. Here stand the town hall and the church buildings, surrounded by architecture typical of Hungarian towns in the Great Plain from the early 20th century: one- and two-storey houses with arcades and commercial premises on the ground floor.
The architectural character took shape during a period when Tiszalök experienced an economic boom thanks to the railway and grain transshipment. Local merchants built houses in eclectic style with Art Nouveau elements. After the construction of the hydroelectric plant, the city was partly rebuilt: some historic buildings gave way to housing for power engineers and administrative buildings. Nevertheless, the centre has preserved a human scale — without high-rise dominants, with green zones along the streets.
Natural surroundings: floodplain ecosystems
The reservoir changed the ecology of the region but did not destroy it. On the contrary, reed beds have formed on the shallows, attracting waterfowl. In spring and autumn, migration routes of herons, geese and ducks pass through Tiszalök. Anglers catch pike-perch, bream and carp here — populations that are maintained through artificial breeding.
The alluvial meadows upstream have preserved the species diversity characteristic of the Tisza floodplain. Willow, alder and oak grow here — trees resistant to temporary flooding. The area is partly designated as a protected zone as a habitat for rare species. From webcams located on the embankment, you can observe the spring flood and how the water inundates the lower terraces of the floodplain.
Cultural life and attractions
The Tiszalök Museum (Tiszalöki Múzeum) houses collections on the history of fishing, navigation and the construction of the hydroelectric plant. A separate exhibition is devoted to the ethnography of the region — clothing, folk art and rural life of the Tisza region. Also of interest are archaeological finds from the territory of the city, indicating Bronze Age settlements.
The Orthodox church, built by Greek merchants in the late 18th century, is one of the few examples of Byzantine architecture in this part of Hungary. Inside, a hand-carved iconostasis has been preserved. The cultural life of Tiszalök is not limited to museums: annual fairs and fish cuisine festivals are held here, where paprikash is prepared from fresh fish according to local recipes.
Which cameras show the city
Webcams in Tiszalök are positioned to cover key panoramas and functional areas. The feed from the dam provides a view of the HPP water conduits and the reservoir — here you can see how the water level changes depending on the season and the plant's operating regime. Cameras in the historic centre show the market square and traffic on the main streets. Embankment webcams display the river landscape and angler activity. Thanks to online streams, you can assess weather conditions, road congestion and the city atmosphere at any time of day.
