The Birth of a City on the Danube

Budapest is not just the capital of Hungary, but a true city-duo, divided by the majestic Danube. Its history is unique: Budapest was formed in 1873 by the merger of three cities — Buda, Pest, and Óbuda. Buda stretches across the hilly right bank, attracting visitors with ancient castles and baths, while Pest on the flat left bank became the center of vibrant social and economic life. Today, Budapest webcams online allow you to observe this amazing contrast of two completely different worlds merged into one.

The Grandeur of the Buda and Pest Banks

The city's main symbol, visible from almost any point, is the Parliament building. This grandiose structure amazes with its scale: the Budapest Parliament building contains 691 rooms, 29 staircases, 10 inner courtyards, 27 gates, and is the third largest parliamentary building in the world. The Parliament's height is 96 meters — the same as St. Stephen's Basilica, symbolizing the equality of secular and church authority. The architect of the Parliament was Imre Steindl, and the decision to build it was made after the unification of Buda and Pest in 1873. The Parliament's dome hall houses Hungary's main state symbols — the Holy Crown of St. Stephen.

Connecting the two banks was made possible by engineering genius. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge was built in 1849 to the design of British engineer Adam Clark, funded by Count István Széchenyi, after whom it is named. The Chain Bridge is 375 meters long and nearly 15 meters wide; it is the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Budapest. You can watch it towering above the dark waters of the river through Budapest webcams in real time.

The Thermal Heart of Europe

Hungary is famous for its underground riches, and Budapest is the absolute record holder here. About 130 natural hot mineral springs flow beneath Budapest, making the city the largest thermal resort in Europe. The most famous spa complex is the Széchenyi Baths. The Széchenyi Baths are the largest spa complex in Europe, with 18 thermal pools, open since 1913, built in Neo-Baroque style. The Széchenyi Baths' springs produce water at 74°C and 77°C; the pools maintain a temperature of about 38°C, allowing outdoor bathing even in winter.

Andrásy Avenue and Heroes' Square

The heart of Pest beats at Heroes' Square. It was completed for the celebration of Hungary's millennium in 1896 and hosted over 50,000 guests. At the center of Heroes' Square rises the 36-meter Millennium Monument column, topped with a sculpture of the Archangel Gabriel. Behind the Millennium Monument stand two semicolonnades, each 85 meters long, with 14 bronze statues of significant Hungarian rulers and politicians. The Millennium Monument was conceived in 1894 but not completed until 1929. Heroes' Square is located at the end of Andrásy Avenue and adjoins the City Park (Városliget).

Architectural Symbols of the Capital

The spiritual center of the city is St. Stephen's Basilica. St. Stephen's Basilica is 96 meters tall, with a dome 22 meters in diameter, a temple area of 4,730 sq. m, and accommodates 8,500 worshippers. The basilica's dome is painted with scenes from the history of creation; from the dome colonnade, a panorama of the entire city opens up. Budapest webcams are often positioned so that this majestic dome falls within the frame, emphasizing the scale of the historic architecture.

What the Cameras Show

Budapest webcams cover the key locations of Hungary's capital. The cameras capture majestic bridges across the Danube, snow-covered or sun-drenched embankments, bustling intersections in Pest, and quiet streets in Buda. The online broadcast allows you to see the city's panorama from a bird's-eye view or examine the details of historic building facades. The live stream from Budapest is a great opportunity to appreciate the scale of Heroes' Square, watch ships navigate the Danube, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of one of Europe's most beautiful cities without leaving your home.
