1 camerasBüsum — the oldest North Sea resort
Büsum is a small port town north of the Meldorf Bay in Dithmarschen, with a population of about 5,000 people. This cozy resort on the North Sea coast in the state of Schleswig-Holstein has long been a popular destination for family vacations and day trips from Hamburg. The town has preserved the atmosphere of a traditional fishing village, organically combining it with modern resort infrastructure.
The history of Büsum as a seaside resort began in 1837, when it received the official designation "North Sea resort." This makes it Germany's oldest North Sea resort. Since then, the town has attracted tourists seeking a relaxing coastal vacation, healing sea air, and the unique nature of the Wadden Sea.
Fishing port and North Sea shrimp
Büsum's fishing port is the heart of the town and its main attraction. It is still home to a fleet of fishing vessels, and at the dock you can watch moored trawlers and traditional boats. The first mentions of shrimp fishing in Büsum date back to 1624, and the local specialty is Büsumer Krabben, North Sea shrimp (Crangon crangon), which are processed and canned for sale.
The town is known for its traditional festivals — shrimp and fishing days in August. The port is home to the Museumhafen Büsum, a museum of maritime history and fishing dedicated to the traditions of local fishermen. The exhibition tells the story of the development of fishing in the region and features ancient fishing gear and ship models.
Büsum lighthouse — history and architecture
The Büsum lighthouse is one of the town's symbols, visible from afar and serving as a landmark for sailors. The first lighthouse in Büsum was built in 1878 and was a simple lantern mounted on a wooden pole, powered by kerosene. The current lighthouse was built between 1912 and 1913 from 55 tons of cast iron plates and was commissioned in 1913.
An interesting detail: originally the lighthouse was painted black, and in 1952 it received its characteristic red-and-white emblem, which makes it easily recognizable. Since 1976, the lighthouse has been operated automatically and is under the authority of the Waterways Authority. It still serves a navigation function, lighting the way for vessels in the North Sea waters.
Wadden Sea — UNESCO World Heritage Site
Büsum is located in a unique natural area — the Wadden Sea (Wattenmeer), which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2009. It is the only and largest ecosystem of its kind in the world, and one of only two German natural landscapes with World Heritage status.
The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park was opened on October 1, 1985 and covers an area of 4,410 km², making it Germany's largest national park. 68% of the park's area is permanently covered by water, and 30% is periodically submerged. The conservation station in Büsum protects the national park and World Heritage Site along a coastline of about 40 km.
Walking on the Wadden Sea at low tide is one of the most popular activities for tourists. During low tide, the sea recedes, exposing the sandy bottom, which you can walk on while exploring the unique flora and fauna of the intertidal zone.
Attractions and museums of the town
In addition to the port and lighthouse, Büsum offers tourists several interesting sites. On the stairs to the sea, there are water level marks from floods that demonstrate the power of the sea and recall the storms that have repeatedly hit the coast. St. Clement's Church with its ancient tower is another landmark of the town.
In the historic center of Büsum, traditional half-timbered houses have been preserved, creating the atmosphere of an old North German settlement. Narrow streets, souvenir shops, and seafood restaurants make a walk through the town especially pleasant.
Weather and climate on the coast
Büsum's climate is typical of the North Sea coast — mild maritime with cool summers and moderate winters. The fresh sea air, rich in salts and iodine, makes the town attractive for thalassotherapy. At any time of year, you can enjoy walks along the beach, watching the endless sea surface and soaring seagulls.
Büsum webcams allow you to assess weather conditions on the coast in real time, see the state of the sea and promenade before your trip. The live broadcast from cameras installed at the port and on the beach gives you the chance to feel the atmosphere of a North Sea resort without leaving home.
