Bourg-Saint-Maurice — gateway to Paradiski

Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the last major town in the Tarentaise Valley, where alpine landscapes meet the transport infrastructure of a high-mountain resort. This town in the Savoie department serves as a gateway to one of the largest ski areas in the world — Paradiski, which unites Les Arcs, Peisey-Vallandry and La Plagne. In winter, it's alive with skiers and snowboarders; in summer, with hikers and cyclists. The town sits at an altitude of about 810 meters above sea level, while the top cable car stations rise to 3226 meters at the summit of Aiguille Rouge.

The Tarentaise Valley has always been a strategic route through the Alps. The Romans built a road here to the Little St Bernard Pass, and in the Middle Ages the valley was protected by fortifications. Today, Bourg-Saint-Maurice is a modern ski hub where the TGV train from Paris arrives right at the foot of the slopes. The town's webcams allow you to assess the conditions on the slopes and in the villages without leaving home.

Five levels of Les Arcs

The Les Arcs ski complex is not one resort but five independent villages located at different altitudes. Bourg-Saint-Maurice 800, Arc 1600, Arc 1800, Arc 1950 and Arc 2000 — each with its own character and architecture. The lowest level is at 810 meters, and the highest at 3226 meters. The altitude difference creates unique skiing conditions: from November to May, skiers descend slopes with guaranteed snow.

Arc 2000 is the highest village, where snow lasts the longest. Arc 1950 is a modern resort in alpine chalet style with its own infrastructure. Arc 1800 is famous for its après-ski on terraces overlooking the valley. Arc 1600 is a quieter spot with wooden chalets. And Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the transport hub where the train stops just steps from the cable car.

Paradiski ski area

Since December 2003, Les Arcs has been directly connected to La Plagne via the two-level Vanoise Express gondola. This link has turned the two resorts into a single Paradiski area with more than 425 kilometers of slopes. From the top stations, there are panoramic views of Mont Blanc — the highest peak in Western Europe.

The highest skiing point is Aiguille Rouge at 3226 meters. From here begins a seven-kilometer run with a vertical drop of 2026 meters, descending to the village of Villaroger. This is one of the most impressive descents in the French Alps — and webcams at the summit show it in real time.

Historical heritage of the valley

Bourg-Saint-Maurice is a town with deep historical roots. As early as the 12th–13th centuries, fortifications were built here to control the route to the Little St Bernard Pass. The Châtelard Tower stands on a rock at the entrance to the Chapieux Valley — this is one of the oldest medieval fortification monuments in Savoie.

The Church of Saint-Maurice (Église Saint-Maurice) is the spiritual center of the town, located within walking minutes of the train station. Nearby is typical alpine architecture with stone houses and tiled roofs. The Isère River divides the town into two parts, giving it the special charm of a mountain river with turquoise water.

Climate and weather in the Tarentaise Valley

Thanks to the enclosed nature of the valley, Bourg-Saint-Maurice has a special microclimate. Winters here are cold and snowy, summers are warm but without sweltering heat. At altitudes above 2000 meters, the snow cover lasts until May, and on glaciers skiing is possible year-round. Webcams at different altitudes allow you to see the difference between the town and the high-mountain villages — it may be raining below while fresh snow lies above.

The region's weather cameras show not only the weather but also slope conditions. Before heading to the resort, it's useful to check visibility, wind strength at the top stations, and the amount of fresh snow. This is especially important for freeriders and those planning to climb to Aiguille Rouge.

Transport accessibility

Bourg-Saint-Maurice is one of the most accessible alpine resorts in Europe. A direct TGV train from Paris takes about four hours, and from Geneva Airport the town is three hours away by car. The train station is located in the town center, and from it to the bottom cable car station is just a few minutes on foot. This makes Bourg-Saint-Maurice convenient for short weekend trips.

In summer, the road to the Little St Bernard Pass runs through the town — a historical route across which Hannibal led his army through the Alps. Cyclists from all over Europe come here to conquer this climb at 2188 meters.

Water park and spa in Bourg-Saint-Maurice

In addition to skiing, Bourg-Saint-Maurice offers infrastructure for relaxation and recovery. The Aquatic Center — a large water park with pools, water slides and spa zones — operates year-round. This is a popular spot among resort guests who want to diversify their ski vacation. Webcams near the water park show queues and occupancy — useful information before visiting.

The town also has thermal centers, restaurants serving Savoyard cuisine, and ski equipment shops. After a day on the slopes, you can try fondue, raclette, or a traditional platter of alpine cheeses here.

What the cameras show in the town

Bourg-Saint-Maurice webcams cover all key points of the resort. Street cameras in the town center broadcast the station square, Rue Saint-Maurice and the area around the water park. On the slopes, cameras are installed in Arc 1600, Arc 1800 and Arc 1950 — they show conditions on the slopes, lift operations and weather at different altitudes. Weather cameras on specialized service websites display current visibility, snow cover and temperature.

For trip planning, it's useful to check the cameras at the top stations — Arc 2000 and Aiguille Rouge. They will show whether it's worth going to the high-mountain zone or better to ski at mid-altitudes. Cameras at the Vanoise Express show conditions on the connecting gondola between Les Arcs and La Plagne. All broadcasts are available for free and without registration — just choose the desired point and watch in real time.
