Posio: A Hidden Gem of Southern Lapland

Posio is a municipality in Finland, located in the province of Lapland, attracting travelers with its pristine nature and unique cultural sites. The municipality was formed around 1925–1926 mainly from the territories of Kuusamo. Today it is a place where ancient forests, crystal-clear lakes, and majestic canyons create a landscape untouched by time.

The population density of the municipality is only 1.03 people/km², making Posio one of the most sparsely populated regions in the country. At the same time, 99% of residents are Finnish-speaking, and 12.5% of the population are children under 15, indicating the youthful character of the municipality. The territory of Posio is an ancient region of Sami settlement, located in an idyllic part of southern Lapland.

The Lake Kingdom: Water Riches of the Region

The water resources of Posio are impressive in scale. 505.11 km² of the territory is covered by lakes — this is about 14% of the total area of the municipality, which is 3,544.67 km². Such an abundance of water bodies creates a unique ecosystem and makes the region attractive for fishing, swimming, and water tourism.

Lake Kitkajärvi deserves special attention. It is called the "Lapland Riviera" — a popular place for swimming and outdoor recreation. White sandy beaches and crystal-clear water attract tourists from all over Europe. In summer, you can sunbathe on the Saikannsalmi beach, and in winter, enjoy winter fishing and walks on the frozen surface.

Korouoma Canyon: A Natural Wonder of Finland

Korouoma Canyon is a nature reserve stretching about 30 km, surrounded by old forests rich in medicinal herbs. This is a place where the Korojoki River cut through the rock, creating a gorge up to 130 meters deep. The canyon contains icefalls up to 60 meters high — some of the highest in Finland, popular for ice climbing.

In winter, the canyon turns into a fairy-tale kingdom of ice. Numerous waterfalls freeze, forming giant staircases of icicles and ice columns. Routes of varying difficulty allow both beginners and experienced tourists to enjoy this natural wonder. A short scenic route passes by three waterfalls, while a longer trail follows the Korojoki River through the entire reserve.

Riisitunturi National Park: Fairy-tale Spruces

Riisitunturi National Park offers hiking trails to waterfalls and snow-covered "fairy-tale" spruces. The main trail Riisin Rietas is named after a local spirit according to legend. In winter, the trees here are covered with a thick layer of snow, creating fanciful figures that seem like living characters from Sami fairy tales.

The park is ideal for hiking and cross-country skiing. Routes vary in difficulty — from short walks to multi-day hikes. Viewpoints offer panoramic views of the surrounding forests and lakes, and in clear weather, you can see the northern lights.

Pentik-mäki Culture Centre: Art at the Edge of the World

Pentik-mäki Culture Centre is a family business founded by Aune Pentik. Here they produce ceramics, candles, and works of art. Posio is called the place where the world's northernmost ceramics factory is located (Pentik factory).

The International Museum of Coffee Cups at Pentik-mäki contains over 2,000 exhibits from more than 80 countries. The museum opened in 2004, admission is free. The collection demonstrates the diversity of cultural tea-drinking traditions — from Japanese tea ceremonies to Scandinavian coffee breaks.

Climate and Natural Features

Posio is located in a subarctic climate zone with long cold winters and short warm summers. Snow cover lasts from November to April, creating ideal conditions for winter sports. In summer, the white nights allow you to enjoy nature almost around the clock.

The region is rich in berries and mushrooms. Blueberries, lingonberries, cloudberries, and porcini mushrooms grow in abundance in the surrounding forests. Gathering forest gifts is a traditional activity for local residents and a popular pastime for tourists.

How to Get There and Where to Stay

The nearest major airport is in Rovaniemi, about 110 km from Posio. From there, you can reach it by car or bus. Roads in Finland are of excellent quality, and the distances between attractions are quite manageable in a single day.

Accommodation options range from lakeside cottages to hotels in the center of Posio. Many tourists choose to rent Finnish cabins with a sauna — this allows you to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of northern Finland and enjoy nature in seclusion.

What the Cameras Show
