Aktau — A City on the Caspian Shore
Aktau is a young city in southwestern Kazakhstan, located on the Mangyshlak Peninsula. Founded in 1961 as the settlement of Aktaysky, it rapidly grew into a major port center. From 1964 to 1991, the city was named Shevchenko in honor of the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, who was exiled here in the mid-19th century. Today, Aktau is a city with a population of about 183,000 people, a vital transportation hub and the country's only seaport.
The city was built in a harsh desert climate. According to the Köppen classification, Aktau's climate is classified as BWk — desert, arid with very hot summers. Annual precipitation is only about 140 mm. Despite this, the city is lush with greenery thanks to a complex irrigation system and desalination plants that provide it with fresh water.
The Promenade and Sea Views
The Aktau promenade is the city's pride and a favorite spot for walks. A spacious 3-kilometer promenade stretches along the Caspian Sea, offering picturesque panoramas. Here you'll find observation decks, playgrounds, recreation areas, and cafés. From the promenade, there is a view of the vast expanse of the Caspian — the largest enclosed body of water on the planet.
Webcams on the promenade broadcast the walkway, the colonnade with sculptures, the observation deck, and the Caspian Sea in real time. You can watch locals relaxing, cycling, and enjoying sunsets over the sea.
Melovoy Lighthouse and the Caravel Monument
One of Aktau's main landmarks is the Melovoy Lighthouse, which celebrated its 50th anniversary. Its height is 73 meters, and it helps ships reach the port of Aktau. Interestingly, the modern lighthouse stands on the roof of one of the residential buildings — a unique architectural solution.
The city's maritime calling card is the "Caravel" monument, symbolizing Aktau's maritime history. Nearby are monuments to Taras Shevchenko and Kurmangazy, as well as the Beket-Ata Mosque. These landmarks are visible from street webcams installed in the central part of the city.
Residential Areas and Urban Structure
Aktau has an unusual layout — the city consists of residential areas numbered in sequence. These include 4, 5, 7A, 14–16, 18, 20, 31–33, 35, as well as the Shygys district. Each residential area is a self-contained residential complex with its own infrastructure.
In the newer part of the city, a park spanning 23 hectares has been laid out. Where there was once barren steppe, thousands of trees now flourish — to help them survive in the dry climate, specialists installed a complex underground irrigation system. Webcams in the residential areas show everyday city life: courtyards, avenues, squares, and parks.
Aktau Port — The Maritime Gateway of the Country
Aktau Port is rightly called the "Maritime Gateway of Kazakhstan". It is the country's only seaport, through which oil and grain exports are carried out. A camera on the roof of the Ardager shopping center broadcasts the port's operations live — you can watch ships being loaded and marine traffic in motion.
The port plays a key role in the region's economy. The Caspian Pipeline begins here, as do sea routes to Russia, Iran, and Azerbaijan. Port webcams allow you to see the scale of this infrastructure in real time.
Airport and Transport Accessibility
Aktau Airport (code SCO) is the second busiest airport in Kazakhstan after Almaty. It connects the city with major domestic and international destinations. Airport webcams show the runway, terminals, and aircraft movements.
The nearest live streams can be found by searching "Aktau airport right now." The cameras operate around the clock, allowing you to observe airport operations at any time of day.
Beaches and the Caspian Coastline
The beach season in Aktau runs from late May to late August, when the sea warms up to comfortable temperatures. The city has numerous modern recreation bases and beaches. Webcams near the rocky beach show the rocky shore, fishermen, and vacationers on the Caspian coast.
The Caspian Sea off the coast of Aktau has a distinctive landscape — a rocky shore with picturesque cliffs. In good weather, the water takes on a turquoise hue, and oil rigs are visible on the horizon — an integral part of the Caspian seascape.
Climate and Weather Conditions
Aktau's climate is one of the driest in Kazakhstan. Summers here are hot, with temperatures above +35°C, winters are mild but windy. Constant sea winds create a cooling sensation but also bring dust and sand.
Webcams allow you to assess current weather conditions in the city: visibility, sea state, and precipitation. This is especially useful for tourists planning a trip and for those heading to the beach.
What the Cameras Show
