Aktau Embankment: A Walk by the Caspian Sea

Aktau is one of the youngest cities in Kazakhstan, emerging in the late 1950s thanks to the industrial breakthrough of the mid-20th century. Founded in 1961 as the settlement of Aktusky, it gained city status in 1963, and from 1964 to 1991 it was named Shevchenko in honor of the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, who was exiled to the Mangyshlak Peninsula in the 19th century. Today, about 270,000 people live here according to the 2023 census.

The Aktau Embankment is a modern pedestrian zone stretching along the rocky coast of the Caspian Sea. The Caspian Sea covers an area of about 371,000 km², and its maximum depth reaches 1,025 meters in the South Caspian Basin.

The main attraction of the embankment is a large amphitheater with a 70-meter stage, built for the 5th Summit of the Caspian States in 2018. This event brought together the presidents of Kazakhstan, Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan, and the amphitheater became the main concert venue and a place for ceremonial events. From June to September, the water in the Caspian Sea near Aktau warms up to +20 °C, and in August the temperature can rise to +23–25 °C. These are comfortable conditions for swimming, although the rocky shore requires caution when entering the water.

The Caspian Sea is unique: it has no connection to the ocean, which formally allows it to be called a lake, yet it possesses all the characteristics of a sea. The water level is subject to fluctuations — currently it is about 28 meters below the level of the World Ocean. Salinity varies from 0.05 ‰ near the mouth of the Volga to 11–13 ‰ in the southeast.

How to Get to the Aktau Embankment

The embankment is located in the central part of the city and is accessible by various means of transport. From the 15th microdistrict, you can reach the embankment by city bus No. 2, which runs from the 15th microdistrict (house 52) to Sary Bazar. The bus operates from 06:30 to 21:30, allowing you to reach the embankment at any time of day.

On holidays, such as during Nauryz celebrations, shuttle buses run from the Public Service Center in the 15th microdistrict to the amphitheater square on the embankment. This is convenient for those who want to participate in ceremonial events or simply attend city festivities.

For visitors to the city, the Aktau Embankment is a must-see. Its length is more than two kilometers, and it runs at the foot of the cliffs, offering views of the Caspian waters. The pedestrian zone is equipped with benches, decorative railings, and green areas with palm trees.
