History and Spirit of the Jōkamachi

Toyama developed as a classic Japanese jōkamachi, centered around a castle founded in the 16th century. It was built in 1543 by the local ruler Mizukoshi Katsushige. The fortress survived turbulent centuries: in 1585 it was attacked and destroyed by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, then the castle was restored but burned down again in 1609. In 1661, Maeda Toshitsugu rebuilt the fortress once more. After the Meiji Restoration in 1870, the castle was dismantled, and in 1954 it was restored as a reinforced concrete replica under the direction of architect Yamamoto Katsumi.
