Yubileynaya Square in Velikiye Luki — online webcam
Yubileynaya Square — the heart of the trans-river district of Velikiye Luki
Yubileynaya Square is one of the central squares of Velikiye Luki, Pskov Oblast, located in the so-called trans-river district on the right bank of the Lovat River. This space combines several functions: it hosts city events, houses a culture and recreation park, and features architectural monuments of historical value for a city with over 850 years of history. The online camera broadcasting a view of the square allows you to see this place in real time — from the green lawns of the park area to the facades of administrative buildings.
Location and boundaries of the square
The square occupies the territory between two important city arteries: Aleksandr Matrosov Embankment and Lizy Chaykina Street. The embankment stretches along the Lovat River, creating a picturesque edge between the water surface and the urban development. Lizy Chaykina Street, named after the legendary pilot who died heroically in the skies over Velikiye Luki in 1943, connects the square with other districts of the city. This location makes Yubileynaya Square a kind of gateway between the historical center and the trans-river district of Velikiye Luki.
History of the square: from Pyatnitskaya to Yubileynaya
The roots of this territory's history go back deep into antiquity. As historians suggest, settlements already existed here in the 9th–11th centuries, making the square one of the oldest locations in the modern city. The first documented mention of Velikiye Luki in the Novgorod Chronicle dates back to 1166, when Prince of Kiev Rostislav I Mstislavich arrived here for negotiations with Novgorod boyars.
The modern layout of the square began to take shape in the 1790s, when Velikiye Luki received city status and the center was being built according to the master plan. Originally, the square was called Pyatnitskaya — after the church with a chapel dedicated to Paraskeva Pyatnitsa that stood here. In the 1920s, after the establishment of Soviet power, the square was renamed in honor of Kliment Timiryazev — a famous Russian natural scientist and plant physiologist.
The square acquired its modern name on June 16, 1966, when the executive committee of the City Council of Workers' Deputies decided to rename it in honor of the 800th anniversary of the first chronicle mention of the city. This event became part of the large-scale anniversary celebrations held in Velikiye Luki in July 1966.
Memorial sign in honor of the city's 800th anniversary
The key event of the anniversary year was the laying of a memorial sign. On July 17, 1966, a solemn ceremony took place at Yubileynaya Square: a memorial stone was laid at the site of the future obelisk. On the polished surface of the black stone, facing east, were carved the words: "An obelisk will be erected here to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Velikiye Luki. Laid on July 17, 1966, by decision of the executive committee of the City Council of Workers' Deputies." A stainless steel capsule with a message to future generations was placed under the stone.
The memorial sign is located in the southeastern part of the square, at the end of Aleksandr Matrosov Embankment. In 2016, for the city's 850th anniversary, an obelisk was solemnly unveiled at the square, completing the composition begun half a century earlier.
Architectural heritage: the real school building
One of the dominant features of the square is a large white building of classical architecture with a colonnade and pediment. This is the former real school, built in 1904–1906 at Yubileynaya Square, 4. The building is a monument of regional architectural significance and represents a characteristic example of public construction from the early 20th century. Currently, the historic building houses the Velikiye Luki Museum, preserving the memory of the city's past.
In the early 20th century, the square and its surroundings formed an entire ensemble of public buildings: the Pyatnitskaya Church, a girls' gymnasium, and a parish school were located here. Many of these structures have not survived to the present day, but the real school building remains an important testament to the pre-revolutionary history of Velikiye Luki.
Culture and recreation park
Yubileynaya Square is organically integrated into the territory of the city culture and recreation park, giving it a special character. The park area with green lawns, walking paths, benches, and trees creates a space for relaxation for city residents and guests. Coniferous spruce trees, planted among deciduous species, maintain the green massif at any time of year.
The park features street lights providing illumination in the evening, as well as sports and play structures. In 2019, modern art objects appeared at the square: the "Palms" installation and fifteen diamond-shaped metal structures, adding a modern accent to the historical space.
Aleksandr Matrosov Embankment
On the southern side, the square is bordered by Aleksandr Matrosov Embankment — named after one of the most famous heroes of the Great Patriotic War, who distinguished himself in the battles for Velikiye Luki. The embankment stretches along the Lovat River, offering picturesque views of the water surface and the opposite bank. This is a popular place for walks, especially in the warm season, when the river reflects the urban development and greenery of coastal trees.
Opposite the square, across the embankment, is the Yubileynaya Hotel, built in 1966 specifically for the city's 800th anniversary. This building became part of the large-scale preparations for the anniversary and remains one of the notable landmarks in the trans-river district of Velikiye Luki.
