Pskov Kremlin — the Heart of the Old City

The Pskov Kremlin, situated on a narrow rocky promontory at the confluence of the Pskova and Velikaya rivers, is the urban, spiritual, and political core of the old city. The fortress is located in the center of the historic part of Pskov, where architectural monuments of different eras blend with the living history of the ancient region. From here, a picturesque view opens up over the river, the embankment, and the cathedral, which is the signature landmark of the entire ensemble.

Pskov's Golden Embankment

From the riverbank in front of the Kremlin stretches a well-maintained pedestrian zone 700 meters long, which in 2020 made it into the top most beautiful streets of Russia. The Golden Embankment is considered one of the coziest spots in the city for walks, offering a clear view of the Pskov Kremlin. The camera broadcasts a panorama from this embankment, where pedestrians can relax strolling along the calm waters of the river. Spherical street lamps, benches, and a stone fence create a cozy atmosphere for observing the historic complex with European grandeur.

Trinity Cathedral — the Main Jewel of the Kremlin

In the background of the camera rises the majestic Trinity Cathedral, which is the dominant feature of the landscape. The current, fourth in succession, cathedral building was constructed in 1699 and stands 78 meters tall, making it the largest by area and the tallest temple structure in the history of Pskov. The cathedral draws attention with its golden domes, a bell tower, and massive fortress walls, forming a unified architectural ensemble.

Four Belts of Fortress Fortifications

The Pskov fortress has five gradually formed belts of fortifications, including the walls of the Krom and the Dovmontov Wall (Persi). The modern stone construction of the fortress dates back to the medieval period, when Pskov reached significant military and political power. These fortifications surrounded the city and created a defensive system that served for centuries and became one of the symbols of ancient Russian urban planning. At the same time, the Kremlin towers stand about 35 meters tall and serve not only as defensive structures but also as architectural elements of the city's silhouette.

Sacred History of Trinity Cathedral

Over the years of its existence, Trinity Cathedral has preserved many sacred relics and historical events associated with it. The commissioner and inspiration behind the construction of the cathedral was Bishop Nifont of Novgorod and Pskov, which gave the temple special status significance. The cathedral has five domes, where the golden dome symbolizes Jesus Christ, and the dark ones — the apostle-evangelists. Before a major historical event, Prince Alexander Nevsky prayed in this very temple, which gives the cathedral historical significance not only as an architectural monument but also as a place of spiritual experience of the era.

Mystical Towers of Pskov

Within the Kremlin ensemble, several towers stand out, each with its own history and legends. A special place is occupied by the Gremyachaya (Kosmodemyanskaya) Tower — the most mystical tower of Pskov, associated with legends of an enchanted princess sleeping in a crypt beneath the tower, the shadow of a deceased prince, and encounters with dark forces. Among other towers of the ensemble, it is worth noting the Flat Tower, mentioned in chronicles since 1500, and Kutekroma with its unusual architecture. Each of the towers is adorned with crowning elements and finials, giving the silhouette of the Kremlin expressiveness and individuality.
