La Norma is a ski resort in southeastern France, nestled in the Modan valley among majestic alpine ranges. How the resort was created
La Norma is a young resort by alpine standards. Its opening took place in 1971, and the first full ski season ran in the winter of 1971–1972. The project was implemented by an intercommunal syndicate of three communes — Avrieux, Bourg, and Villard-de-Bourg — on the Pra plateau in Haute-Maurienne.
In 2022, the resort celebrated its 50th anniversary with a major modernization. A new cable car was installed for the jubilee, and the infrastructure of slopes and lifts was upgraded. This allowed La Norma to remain competitive against larger neighboring resorts.
Geographic location and elevations
La Norma spans elevations from 1350 m to 2750 m above sea level, providing a vertical drop of about 1400 meters. The resort's base village sits at 1350 m, while the highest skiing points reach 2750 m — this ensures reliable snow cover throughout the entire season.
The total length of slopes is 65 kilometers. The slopes face predominantly north and northwest, which helps preserve snow better. From the highest point of the resort, a 360-degree panorama of the Savoy peaks opens up, including the territory of the Vanoise National Park.
Unique pedestrian concept
One of La Norma's main features is its 100% pedestrian zone. Cars are prohibited here, creating a safe and quiet atmosphere for visitors. Resort guests leave their cars in a large free underground parking lot at the entrance and transfer to a special underground shuttle train that takes them directly to the center of the village.
This concept makes La Norma particularly attractive for families with children — young guests can move freely around the resort without worrying about car traffic. The pedestrian-centric approach also helps preserve clean mountain air and tranquility.
Connection to the Greater Alpine region
La Norma doesn't exist in isolation — since 2018, the resort has been linked by a single ski pass with neighboring Valfréjus. This expands skiing opportunities and allows guests to move between the two villages without restrictions.
Just 15 kilometers from La Norma lies Orelle — the gateway to the famous "Three Valleys" (Trois Vallées) ski area, linking Courchevel, Méribel, and Val Thorens. This means resort guests can reach one of the world's largest interconnected ski areas in a short time.
Sports infrastructure
The resort features a permanent slalom stadium on the "Fontaine aux Oiseaux" slope, authorized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). French military sports championships and national alpine skiing competitions are held here.
The "Fontaine aux Oiseaux" stadium is a blue slope visible from the camera at the lower station. It's one of the resort's attractions, drawing not only skiing enthusiasts but also professional athletes for off-season training.
Transport accessibility
Despite its mountain location, La Norma has excellent transport accessibility. The resort can be reached in just 10 minutes from Modane train station or from the A43 highway exit — the distance is about 5 kilometers.
Modane train station is connected to Lyon, Grenoble, and via high-speed service — to Paris. The A43 highway is the main transport artery linking the Alps with the rest of France. This makes La Norma a convenient option for those traveling without a car.
