The First Capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania
Novogrudok was first mentioned in chronicles in 1044 in the chronicle of Prince Yaroslav's campaign. The city earned this status for good reason: it was the site of the first capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. These places are associated with the names of the great Lithuanian princes Mindaugas and Vytautas.
Ruins of Novogrudok Castle
Novogrudok Castle was a mighty citadel and residence of Lithuanian princes. Over seven centuries of existence, it went through a path from prosperity to decline and revival. In 2012–2015, under the state program "Castles of Belarus," conservation of the ruins was planned along with restoration of the compositional structure. Novogrudok itself is one of the oldest cities in the country — in 2044 it will celebrate its 1000th anniversary.
Multicultural Heritage and Architecture
Novogrudok's multicultural heritage encompasses Eastern (Orthodox), Western (Catholic), and Jewish cultures, reflected in its architecture: remnants of the Upper and Small Castles, the 17th-century Fara Church, the 17th-century Boris and Gleb Church, and a synagogue. Adam Mickiewicz and the Novogrudok Region
The name of the great poet is inextricably linked with Novogrudok. Adam Mickiewicz was born on the Zaosye farmstead in the Novogrudok region in 1798 into the family of lawyer Nikolai Mickiewicz. The city is home to the Mound of Immortality of Adam Mickiewicz — a unique man-made monument of the 20th century and the only named one in Belarus, created in the 1920s on the territory of the Small Castle.
Natural Gems Around the City
The main natural attraction of the Novogrudok region is its landscape. A few kilometers from the city lies Lake Litovka, immortalized by Adam Mickiewicz in the poem "Grażyna". Twenty kilometers south of Novogrudok is Lake Svitiaz, known from Mickiewicz's ballads, surrounded by ancient dense forest. Lake Svitiaz is encircled by the Svitiaz Landscape Reserve, which comprises about thirty different forest types and is home to rare plants. And 24 kilometers from the city, in the forests near the village of Bolshie Tupoly, are the "Smolchitsky glacial conglomerates".
Festivals and Cultural Life
The city regularly hosts the medieval culture festival "Navahradak Castle". An annual traditional festival of bard and singer-songwriter music in memory of Vysotsky, "Music of Hearts", takes place here. Novogrudok also hosts a festival of national cultures at the Mickiewicz Mound. In 2023, the city celebrated the 225th anniversary of Adam Mickiewicz's birth with a grand festival "Oh, Navahradak Land, My Native Home!".
