Gračanica — a town at the crossroads of northeastern Bosnia
Gračanica is located in the northeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina, along the Tuzla — Doboj highway, on the banks of the Spreča River. Administratively, the town is part of Tuzla Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is connected by roads to Srebrenik, Gračačac, and other settlements in the region. It is one of the most developed cities in the country, having received official city status in 2019.
According to the 2013 census, the population of Gračanica is 45,220 residents. The town is part of the Tuzla agglomeration and plays an important role in the economic life of northeastern Bosnia.
Sahat-kula — the symbol of Gračanica
The town's main landmark is the Sahat-kula clock tower, 27 meters high, which is about 300 years old. It occupies a central place on the coat of arms of Gračanica and is a cultural and historical monument from the Ottoman era. The tower is visible from many points in the city and serves as a landmark for travelers.
Sahat-kula is one of the few surviving examples of Ottoman architecture in the region. Similar towers were built throughout Bosnia in the 16th–18th centuries, but only a handful have survived to this day.
Mosques and religious heritage
Gračanica is famous for its mosques. The Turalibeg Mosque is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2007, it underwent restoration due to the building settling on silty soil — architects gave the new structure a modern appearance while preserving its original features.
Another significant mosque is the White Mosque of Ahmed-pasha, built in the 17th century as the city's main bazaar mosque. Its minaret is visible in the panorama of Gračanica and serves as one of the architectural landmarks.
The town also has a madrasa — an Islamic educational institution that is part of the community's cultural heritage.
Sport and local "Bratstvo"
The football club "Bratstvo Gračanica" (NK Bratstvo Gračanica) is based in the town and competes in the First League of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The team plays its home matches at the city stadium "Luke" (Gradski stadion Luke).
The main rival of the Gračanica club is football club HŠK Posušje from the town of Posušje. Matches between these teams attract fans from all over Bosnia.
Geography and transport accessibility
Gračanica is located in a hilly area surrounded by forests. The Spreča River, a tributary of the Bosna, flows through the town and shapes its landscape. The main Tuzla — Doboj road passes directly through Gračanica, connecting it to the largest cities in northeastern Bosnia.
The nearest settlements are Kočari, Zornica, Grečanike, as well as Tešanj and Šamac. Gračanica is part of a transport corridor connecting the central and northern regions of the country.
