History of Hastings Rock — from rocky shore to resort boardwalk

The name "Hastings Rocks" has an interesting origin. It was given due to the resemblance to the rocky coast of Hastings in England. British colonists who arrived in Barbados in the 17th–18th centuries discovered a geological formation from the early 19th century at the entrance to Carlisle Bay and named it after the familiar English coastline.

Originally, this was a rocky shoreline with dark cobblestones that locals used as natural protection from the waves. Over time, a breakwater was built here, and later a concrete retaining wall with a wooden deck was constructed. Today, Hastings Rocks is better known as "the Boardwalk" — a pedestrian zone that has become the center of resort life.

Christ Church Parish — the cradle of Barbadian history

Hastings is located in Christ Church parish — one of the oldest administrative districts on the island. Christ Church parish is one of the six original parishes created in 1629 by Governor Sir William Tufton. The first Christ Church Parish Church was built around 1629 from wood near the Dover coast, but was destroyed by a flood in 1669 and washed out to sea.
