Alba Iulia Webcam — Live Broadcast from the Heart of Romania
Historic Center of Transylvania Live
The webcam in Alba Iulia reveals one of Romania's most significant cities — a place where eras converge. From a bird's eye view, you can see the characteristic urban landscape with red tiled roofs, green park areas, and the picturesque hilly terrain of Transylvania. The camera is mounted on a metal building structure, with a green-and-black striped pipe serving as its support. Below unfolds a panorama: a well-maintained park with trees, a blue swimming pool, city streets with moving traffic. In the distance, a church tower and a chain of hills are visible.
Alba Carolina Fortress: Seven Hectares of History
Within the camera's field of view lies the territory of Alba Carolina Fortress — the largest fortification in Romania. Its construction began on November 4, 1715 and lasted more than two decades. The project was designed according to the principles of French military engineer Sébastien Vauban, making the fortress a masterpiece of fortification art of its time. The walls reach three meters in height and one and a half meters in width. The total area of the fortress is 70 hectares.
From Roman Apulum to Modern Day
The site where Alba Iulia stands was strategically important long before the Habsburgs. In 106 AD, the Romans under Emperor Trajan conquered Dacia and established a fortified military camp here called Apulum. It was one of the largest cities in the Roman province, inhabited by the warlike Dacian tribes. Archaeologists believe the exact location of the Dacian fortress city of Apulon lies near modern Alba Iulia.
Cultural Heritage in the Frame
In the historic center of the city, which falls within the online camera's lens, key landmarks are located. The National Museum of the Union houses artifacts related to the unification of Transylvania and Romania in 1918. One of the country's oldest libraries — the Batthyaneum Library — was founded in the 18th century and contains rare manuscripts and early printed books. The historic Calea Motilor street runs through the fortress and connects its main gates.
Architectural Landmarks
Two cathedrals stand out on the city's panorama. St. Michael's Cathedral is one of the oldest Romanesque churches in Transylvania, built in the 12th–13th centuries. Nearby rises the Coronation Cathedral, consecrated in 1922 in honor of King Ferdinand and Queen Mary. The church tower visible in the distance serves as a landmark for tourists exploring the surroundings.
