Central Square of Suceava — Live Webcam in Real Time
Suceava — the Gateway to Bukovina
Suceava is located in northeastern Romania, in the historical region of Bukovina. The city lies in the Suceava River valley at an altitude of about 320 meters above sea level. Suceava was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia for more than two centuries — from 1365 to 1565. Today it is the administrative center of Suceava County with a population of about 86,000 people according to the latest census.
The city has preserved a unique architectural heritage from different eras — from medieval fortifications to Baroque facades and communist-era buildings. The online camera on the central square allows you to see this interweaving of historical layers in real time.
22 December Square: The Heart of the City
The central square of Suceava is officially called Piața 22 Decembrie — 22 December Square. It is a spacious paved area formed between 1961 and 1963 during a large-scale reconstruction of the city center. Before the fall of the communist regime, the square was named Piața 23 August — 23 August Square.
The current name commemorates December 22, 1989 — the day the regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu was overthrown in Romania. This is one of the key dates of the Romanian Revolution, and the renaming of the main square became a symbol of change.
Architectural Ensemble of the Square
Along the perimeter of Piața 22 Decembrie stand monumental light-colored buildings with dark roofs. On the west side, the Casa de Cultură a Sindicatelor — Palace of Culture of the Trade Unions, dominates the square. It is a characteristic example of socialist-period architecture. Its facade is adorned with geometric shapes and simple lines typical of public buildings from that era.
The eastern part of the square is occupied by the Palatul Administrativ — Administrative Palace. Since 1990, it has housed the prefecture and county council of Suceava. The building serves as the seat of local government and is one of the largest administrative complexes in the city.
Beneath the square are two underground parking lots with a total capacity of 162 parking spaces. The entrance to the parking in the eastern part is via a roundabout at the intersection of streets.
Monument to Peter Mushat
For more than thirty years — from 1976 to 2010 — an equestrian monument to Peter I Mushat stood in the center of the square. This Moldavian ruler is considered the founder of the Suceava Fortress in the 14th century. The monument was created by sculptor Pavel Vasilescu and became one of the city's symbols.
In 2010, the monument was moved closer to the Administrative Palace on Ștefan cel Mare Street. The sculpture of the horseman on horseback still reminds residents and visitors of Suceava of the city's medieval past.
Suceava Fortress on the Horizon
The eastern part of the city is occupied by a plateau 70 meters high, on which rises the Cetatea de Scaun a Sucevei — Suceava Seat Fortress. This medieval citadel was built by Moldavian rulers in the 14th–15th centuries as part of a system of defensive fortifications against the Ottoman Empire.
The fortress served as the residence of Moldavian rulers during the period when Suceava was the capital of the principality. Today, a museum operates here, and the inner courtyard and restored walls are open to visitors. From the central square, the fortress is visible as a dominant landmark to the east.
Geographical Location and Surroundings
Suceava is located approximately 450 kilometers northeast of Bucharest. The city lies at the junction of historical regions — southern Bukovina and western Moldavia. The surrounding area is dominated by hilly terrain covered with mixed forests.
Behind the square, visible in the background, are wooded hills and trees characteristic of the foothills of the Eastern Carpathians. In the distance on the horizon, an industrial chimney can be discerned — a trace of the city's modern infrastructure.
Climate and Best Time for Observation
Suceava lies in a zone of moderately continental climate. Winters here are cold with snowfall, summers are warm and sufficiently humid. The online camera on the square operates year-round, allowing you to observe the city in any weather.
In spring and autumn, the square is especially picturesque: the trees around it change color, and the soft light emphasizes the architectural details of the buildings. In winter, the paved surface of the square is covered with snow, creating a contrast with the dark roofs of the surrounding buildings.
What You Can See on the Camera
The webcam overlooking Suceava broadcasts a panorama of the central Piața 22 Decembrie. In the foreground is the edge of the building on which the camera is mounted. In the center of the frame is a spacious paved square with pedestrians and temporary structures. Along the perimeter are multi-story residential and commercial buildings in light colors with dark roofs. On the right, a tall tower building with a communication antenna on the roof stands out. In the background is a wooded area with trees, and an industrial chimney is visible in the distance. People stroll across the square, and cars can be seen on the adjacent streets.
