Where McCoy Station Is Located

McCoy Station is an intermediate ski station at Mammoth Mountain resort in California, USA. It sits roughly halfway between the base and the mountain summit, in the Sierra Nevada mountains. History of the Name: Dave McCoy

The station is named after Dave McCoy — the founder of Mammoth Mountain resort. Unlike many modern resorts built by large corporations, Mammoth Mountain started with one person who in the 1940s obtained a permit to install the first lift on this mountain.

Dave McCoy built the resort over decades, often manually cutting trails and installing equipment in harsh high-altitude conditions. Inside McCoy Station today is the McCoy Museum, dedicated to the history of the resort's creation and its founder.

Elevation and Geographic Location

McCoy Station sits at an elevation of 9,630 feet (2,935 meters) above sea level. This is approximately the midpoint between the Main Lodge base area (around 8,900 feet) and the mountain summit.

Mammoth Mountain itself reaches a maximum elevation of 11,053 feet (3,369 meters). The resort covers over 3,500 acres of ski terrain with more than 150 trails and 28 lifts.

The Sierra Nevada region is known for its high number of sunny days — averaging around 300 per year, making it an attractive destination for winter recreation.

The Station's Role in Resort Infrastructure

McCoy Station is a central hub where several key lifts and trails converge. From here you can reach the summit via the Panorama Gondola, descend to the base, or access intermediate and advanced trails.

The station is served by Chair 3, Chair 12 lifts, as well as the Dragon's Back Trail and Mammoth Mountain Trail. It is a popular meeting and rest spot — there is a covered restaurant where you can grab a bite without descending to the base.

The Panorama Gondola connects three key points: Main Lodge at the base, McCoy Station at mid-mountain, and the Mammoth Mountain summit itself. The gondola ride is an attraction in its own right, offering views of the entire mountain range.

Seasonal Features: Winter and Summer

In winter, McCoy Station is a classic ski stop. The slopes are covered with snow, lifts are running, and skiers and snowboarders are on the trails. The live webcam shows current slope occupancy and weather conditions — visibility, fresh snowfall, and cloud cover.

In summer, the picture changes. Snow melts away, revealing dirt trails, gravel paths, and marking signs. The station serves as a stop for tourists hiking or mountain biking to the summit via gondola. Coniferous forests on the slopes — spruce and pine — create the typical landscape of the eastern Sierra Nevada.

Thanks to its high elevation, McCoy Station is often above the cloud layer, providing good lighting even on overcast days.
