Ratingen Market Square — Online Webcam
Live Stream from the Historic Market Square
This webcam online opens up a view of the heart of the old German town — the Marktplatz market square. The real-time camera broadcasts the cobblestone space surrounded by half-timbered buildings with red tile roofs. In the center of the frame rises the old town hall — a 16th-century architectural monument with a distinctive dark gable. Citizens stroll across the square, street furniture is arranged on café terraces, and a fountain is visible in the lower right corner. This is a typical historic center of a European town, where white plastered facades sit alongside the dark timber of half-timbered structures.
Ratingen — A Town with History
Ratingen is among the oldest settlements in the region. The town was first mentioned in documents around 809, and received town rights in 1276 — earlier than neighboring Düsseldorf. It is located in the Mettmann district of North Rhine-Westphalia, just 9 kilometers from Düsseldorf. Thanks to its proximity to the metropolis, Ratingen has retained its provincial charm while remaining a modern town with developed infrastructure.
The Town Hall on Marktplatz
The dominant feature of the market square is the old town hall building (Altes Rathaus). It was built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style. The facade is adorned with a curved stair gable (geschweiftes Treppengiebel) — a characteristic element of Renaissance architecture. The number 1751 is visible on the gable — the year the building was restored. Today, the town hall houses the Heimatmuseum local history museum, where artifacts telling the story of the town's life over the centuries are collected.
Architecture Around the Square
Ratingen's market square is surrounded by historic buildings that developed over several centuries. Here you can see the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul and the Marienkapelle chapel. The building facades are diverse: from white plastered surfaces to dark timber-framed structures with dormer windows. The red tile roofs create an architectural ensemble typical of North Rhine-Westphalia. The cobbled square preserves its historic layout, and café terraces along the buildings add a Mediterranean flair to this corner of Germany.
Markets and Fairs
The market square retains its historic function — markets and fairs are regularly held here. Tents with bright canopies are set up on the cobbled square: yellow, blue-and-white, red-and-white striped. Delivery trucks are parked along the buildings. Locals come here for fresh produce, and tourists come for the atmosphere of a genuine European market. The fountain on the right side of the square serves as a popular meeting place and a reference point for navigating the town.
Weather and Climate
Ratingen lies in a temperate maritime climate zone. Winters here are mild, with rare frosts, and summers are warm but not hot. Thanks to its proximity to the Rhine and the North Sea, the weather is often changeable. The real-time webcam allows you to see current weather conditions: whether it's raining, the sun is shining, or the square is covered with light snow. This is especially valuable for travelers planning to visit the town who want to expect what awaits them outside.
How to Get There from Düsseldorf
Getting to Ratingen from Düsseldorf is easy. The S-Bahn train ride takes about 15 minutes. About 25 trains run between the towns daily, including direct services. Trains operate on the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr network, which connects all major cities in the region. From Ratingen station, the market square is within a few minutes' walk — the historic center is compact and convenient for strolling.
